The massive heart attack which took the life of former finance minister, Jim Flaherty, on April 10 has focused public attention on the potential dangers of prednisone.

Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid used widely for numerous acute and chronic inflammatory conditions like asthma, temporal arteritis, autoimmune diseases (ie. Bullous Pemphigoid, Crohn's disease) and numerous skin conditions (especially eczema and hives). Its basic effect is to suppress the immune system's natural inflammatory response.

In the United States, the patent protection process as it relates to the drug industry has been distorted by the political system, intense lobbying and large campaign contributions. The result has been pricing contrary to the greater good of the nation.

The intent of the patent process and the balance between the dual objectives have been warped over the past decade. Increasingly, drug companies are not investing in R&D proportional to the profits they earn from the drugs they bring to market, despite their protests to the contrary.

Doctors have been left powerless to help hundreds of thousands of people struck down by a vile hacking cough this winter.

The lingering illness - that seems to last for three weeks - cannot be treated with antibiotics, with sufferers urged to just rest and get plenty of food and fluids.

The system of population control that was instituted in 1945 as a substitute to war and the obverse side of nuclear deterrence was from the very beginning the cooperative effort of the Allied Powers: the U.S., the Soviet Union/Russia, and the U.K.

The Chernobyl accident just like Fukushima were no accidents but intentional state-sponsored sabotage to lower life expectancy and the dependency burden of the old by increasing morbidity and mortality. The Chernobyl disaster took place in 1986 when the life expectancy of the Russian people first reached 70. After the disaster, life expectancy steadily decreased from 70 to 64 by 1994. It has since recovered and has been stabilized at 70 since 2011. It will be interesting to see if Japan's life expectancy will also decrease in the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster and if a similar man-made disaster is planned for Europe.

"It is not a question any more: radiation produces cancer, and the evidence is good all the way down to the lowest doses," says the late Dr. John Gofman, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley.

"As the element is decaying it is throwing off radiation, and the radiation, if it hits the DNA in the nucleolus and the nucleus of a cell, can alter that DNA in ways that can produce things like cancer," Hartmann said. "Now it can also cause simply the cell to die or it can mutate the cell in all kinds of other weird ways, and so it's kind of a numbers game. If you irradiate a million cells... you might get two or three that become cancerous. That's all it takes, right? You've got cancer," Hartmann continued in his video report. "The cesium could cause no cancer, or it could cause cancer in the first cell it irradiates. To say that there is a safe level of radiation is frankly wrong. It's just wrong."

If you buy a true Himalayan salt lamp and use it regularly, you may just notice easier breathing, a calmer demeanor and better sleep in your near future.

What on Earth is a Himalayan salt lamp? Himalayan sea salt is believed to be composed of dried remnants of the original, primal sea dating back to planet Earth's creation. I've talked before about the health benefits of Celtic sea salt and Himalayan salt , but what if I told you that there are actually lamps made from Himalayan salt? It's true! They're called salt lamps or salt rock lamps, and yes, they're actually made from pink Himalayan salt and are able to light your surroundings - but they're really not bought for their moderate lighting abilities.

Fish kills are a normal part of nature, in some cases.

The city found out about the kill early in the week, and says workers have been cleaning up thousands of pounds of the dead fish over the last few days - mainly to contain the smell.

Service professionals working various positions in Illinois will now be required to complete domestic abuse prevention training as part of their licensing requirements.

The new law, which just went into effect on Sunday, impacts hair stylists, barbers, cosmetologists, estheticians, hair braiders and nail technicians. Although workers won't be required to report violence, they are protected from any liability under the law. Some believe this is a deliberate effort to take advantage of the intimate relations between the service professionals and their clients.

For many Girl Scout troops it is officially cookie season. I feel guilty saying no to the sweet, enthusiastic girls standing outside my grocery store who use their smiles and newly practiced sales pitches to ask how many boxes I'd like to order.

But as a physician who is passionate about health promotion, I politely tell the girls, "No, thanks." I am concerned that every bite and every sale not only delivers an unhealthy snack, but also a dangerous nutrition message. And I'm surprised that more doctors aren't speaking up about this.

"I am deeply offended by the lies being told by the US Government - and more specifically, by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Department of Homeland Security (DHS)."

I am reminded of the 935 now-documented lies told by Dick Cheney to justify a $5 trillion war and multiple occupations from Afghanistan to Niger - or in more Nordic terms, the falsification by the Swedish military, in collaboration with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and CIA, of a Russian submarine that never existed, allegedly "invading" Swedish waters.
