By now many of you have heard about the Naugler family. Headlines have focused on a homeschooling or homesteading family of 10 children who were taken away from their parents in Kentucky on May 7th.

I have never met the Naugler family in person and have never been to their residence. My connection with the family is through online discussions with Nicole in a private Facebook group the past year. There is much I cannot know about them only knowing them through this forum, although the types of discussions had in the group tend to be fairly in depth and people can get to know one another better than many of the people they see every day. I don't pretend to know them well or claim a close friendship, but I do have some understanding of their views and lifestyle and a great deal of sympathy toward their plight. More importantly, I see how the criticisms against them can be applied to many, many other people who have or will be wrongfully treated and will need help.

Of all the sinister things that Internet viruses do, this might be the worst: They can make you an unsuspecting collector of child pornography.

Heinous pictures and videos can be deposited on computers by viruses - the malicious programs better known for swiping your credit card numbers. In this twist, it's your reputation that's stolen. Pedophiles can exploit virus-infected PCs to remotely store and view their stash without fear they'll get caught.

"If you remove her from this hospital, I will call the police," the doctor literally yelled at me in the hallway of the hospital's intensive care unit.

"Go ahead!" I yelled back, both frightened by not only what I was saying but by the tone I wasn't accustomed to using. "Call the police," I yelled again. "Tell them that a murder is about to occur!" Lying in a crib and buried beneath a mess of tubes and wires lay one of my kids - my daughter, even 6 months old - and she appeared to be dying.

Let this serve as a reminder: If you cannot visit Facebook, do not call the police. Just go to Twitter.

On Sept. 5 Aleksey Zhuravlev, a member of the Russian State Duma, proposed an amendment to the Family Code of Russia that would deprive those "practicing non-traditional sexual relations" of their parental rights.

Though the Russian government recently voted to prevent same-sex couples from adopting, this amendment goes far beyond that. Termination of parental rights is usually restricted to situations involving drug and alcohol problems, violence or abuse. This is just another step on a long road of human rights violations being paved by the Russian government.

President Obama's speech to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee on March 4 was framed by the media as a repudiation of an attack on Iran.

The well-known historian and Kennedy administration adviser Arthur Schlesinger called it "a policy of 'anticipatory self-defense' that is alarmingly similar to the policy that imperial Japan employed at Pearl Harbor." In this view of "defense," the United States has the inherent right to wage preventive-not preemptive-war at will. That is, to attack a country on the basis of some potential future capacity to threaten the U.S., which they may or may not attain. This amounts to a right to commit international aggression, even if a threat is largely manufactured, as it was with Iraq in 2003. The Obama administration has sanctioned Iran, isolated it diplomatically, encircled it militarily, subjected it to cyber-warfare and commercial sabotage, and repeatedly threatened it with preemptive strikes. Officials call such pressure an alternative to war, but it might instead serve as a prelude.

Russia's children's ombudsman Pavel Astahov protested on the country's main TV channel on Saturday over a case in which welfare officials in Vantaa were said to have taken four children into custody from a Russian woman.

Astahova said the children were all less than six years of age. He claimed the children were put in an orphanage and then immediately transferred to a foster family, following "the elder girl's complaint that her father had slapped her". Astahov added Russia might declare Finland to be "a dangerous country" for Russian families with children.

Finland - Child welfare has taken a downward turn in Finland, according to an international report issued by Save the Children. In the previous review, Finland was placed second in terms of child welfare.

Now the country is in fourteenth place. Topping the league now are Japan and Spain. In the survey, countries were graded into a league table by comparing mortality, under-nourishment and school attendance statistics.
