When you think of monosodium glutamate (MSG), what is the first thing that comes to mind? More than likely it is Chinese cuisine, however, this same ingredient is also found in several other food products we use everyday.

Almost all processed foods on the grocery store shelves ranging from soups to crackers to meats contain MSG to enhance their flavor. MSG is also an ingredient in vaccines. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vaccine Excipient and Media Summary lists five vaccines that contain monosodium glutamate...

Reports that 80% of Ukraines soybean crop is grown from illegal genetically-modified seeds are "probably true," Mykola Kovalski, chief strategy officer at Astarta, told the Agrimoney Investment Forum.

Astarta, a Ukrainian agribusiness which is the country's largest sugar producer, buys non GM seeds from Canada, Mr Kovalski said. The non-GM meal produced means the company receives a premium for its product. But Mr Kovalski noted that it was "difficult to estimate" the scale of GM planting across the country, with fields of non-GM and GM soybeans plant "It is a problem for us" he said.

Carrol Krause, a former reporter for the Herald-Times of Bloomington, Indiana, had to retire from her journalism career because of an ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2014.

A few months ago she started having digestive issues and could no longer eat normal food. What hospice workers brought her as meal replacements horrified her. Krause writes: "Hospice had the very best of intentions, [but] the stuff they sent over was not real FOOD. In fact, I'm outraged at the idea that they feed this stuff to dying people." What the hospice provided to Krause was a bag full of products by Ensure: pudding, shakes, and a drink that pretends to be apple juice.

Relentless crackdown on journalists and media outlets in Turkey is not news. But the censorship has taken a whole new level last week when a Turkish court stripped a prominent journalist of legal rights over her two children for publishing a video.

Arzu Yildiz, an unwavering journalist mostly reporting about court battles and a fierce critic of the government, was also given a 20-month prison sentence for publishing the video on YouTube last year. The video is a two-hour long court defense of a prosecutor who intercepted a truck in southern Turkey full of arms heading toward a Syrian territory held by Ahrar al-Sham, an Islamist extremist group.

A lot of people today, horrified by how animals are treated in factory farms and feedlots, and wanting to lower their ecological footprint, are looking for healthier alternatives.

As a result, there is a decided trend toward pasture-raised animals. One former vegetarian, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Mark Morford, says he now eats meat, but only "grassfed and organic and sustainable as possible, reverentially and deeply gratefully, and in small amounts." Sales of grassfed and organic beef are rising rapidly. Ten years ago, there were only about 50 grassfed cattle operations left in the U.S. Now there are thousands.

CORONADO, Calif. - Various sea creatures have been washing ashore on San Diego beaches in recent months and now seahorses have been added to the list.

Coronado residents have found a few seahorses on the coastline and scientists say it's likely because of El NiƱo. Other seahorses have been found within the last month from Orange County and Coronado to Imperial Beach. The reason it's unusual is this particular species known as the Pacific Seahorse is normally found hanging out in the waters off central Baja all the way down to Peru.

The drama played out practically by the hour. A closed session discussion of the employment of two popular administrators at a board meeting in Twain Harte provoked a frenzy Tuesday afternoon, only to fizzle in a collective sigh Wednesday evening.

Parents and staff at Twain Harte Elementary-Long Barn School District received an email at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday notifying them that two administrators, Jeff Winfield, superintendent, and Dan Mayers, principal, were up for discussion during closed session at a 4 p.m. meeting Wednesday. The topic? Their employment. That afternoon, parents and staff mobilized on Facebook. At the meeting Wednesday, about 40 people filled the district office conference room, perhaps seven or eight times the usual.

Did you know that the average American home is filled with thousands of artificial chemicals? Only a small percentage of these chemicals have been thoroughly tested for safety! It's crazy considering how often we're exposed to these chemicals.

Of those that have been studied, at least 150 common household chemicals have been associated with cancer, psychological disturbances, allergies, gastrointestinal disorders and various health issues. Shocking right?! Cleaning agents contribute a substantial amount to the toxic chemical load in our home. Many top brand cleaners are filled with known toxins such as solvents, ammonia, formaldehyde, phthalates and ethanolamine.

Two managers for the Department of Children and Families have been fired for failing to remove two young children placed with a couple in Plainfield - a husband convicted in the 1990s of raping a child, and a wife who was on the child-abuse registry.

Managers Leslie Roy and Linda Lukin, who worked in the Willimantic regional office, were fired Monday, according to records obtained Tuesday by The Courant. Discipline is pending against a third DCF employee in the Willimantic office, state sources said. Lawyers for Roy and Lukin said both women are appealing, and they described their clients as exemplary employees with more than 25 years of service.

American workers are in a tough spot: Two-thirds lack a college degree at a time when wages for high school graduates are falling. But that doesn't mean good jobs can't be found for those without a degree.

The debate about whether it's worthwhile to earn a college degree has been growing. Investment bank Goldman Sachs earlier this year noted that the average return on a college degree has been falling, given the rising cost of higher education. Still, while it might take longer for that investment to pay off, economic research has found that earnings for college grads are pulling farther ahead of those without bachelor's degrees.
