We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

It's not like these people can just go out and lie right to our faces, right? They sure can!

If you tell people that advertisers lie, they'll roll their eyes and say, "DUH! That's what advertising is, you naive buffoon!" But then those same people will walk out the door and buy a phone based on a "coverage map" they just saw in an ad. That's because advertisers use our cool cynicism against us -- we think we're being savvy by assuming that all ads exaggerate, but we still assume that's as far as it can go -- exaggeration. It's not like these people can just go out and lie right to our faces, right? They sure can! In fact ...

One alarming aspect of the whole GMO debate is the fact that so many Americans are going about their daily lives completely unaware that they are consuming genetically modified organisms at just about every meal.

So what are GMOs and why should we be concerned about them? GMOs are unhealthy: Since the introduction of GMOs in the mid-1990s, the number of food allergies has sky-rocketed, and health issues such as autism, digestive problems and reproductive disorders are on the rise. Animal testing with GMOs has resulted in cases of organ failure, digestive disorders, infertility and accelerated aging. Despite an announcement in 2012 by the American Medical Association stating they saw no reason for labeling genetically modified foods, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine has urged doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for their patients.

Do you grow your own potatoes or buy in bulk from a farmer market? Follow these 5 easy steps to storing potatoes for winter to keep your potatoes fresh.

This corner stays dark, cool, and performs like a root cellar. I have added a good-sized shelving area where I store the food preserved during the growing season. The shelves are filling up with baskets of onions, garlic, and canned tomato sauce, jelly, salsa, beans, carrots, grape juice, pickles, and applesauce. I can't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment as I look over the jars and baskets of homegrown bounty. Not only because we have this food to feed us but I also feel good knowing exactly where my food comes from and that it was grown with no chemicals.

Sunday's New York Times piece on the corporatization of organics got me to thinking: What are the weirdest additives the USDA allows in food labeled "organic"? Here are five.

Made from seaweed and used as a thickener and stabilizer for certain dairy products like cottage cheese and yogurt, carrageenan is probably the most controversial organic additive. Joanne K. Tobacman, an associate professor of medicine at University of Illinois-Chicago, claims that carrageenan causes intestinal inflammation, and she petitioned the USDA not to approve it for organic food.

You don't have to ingest GMOs as food in order to be exposed to them. There are plenty of other ways that GMOs come into our lives in many other forms.

Cotton: Is that shirt that you have on right now Organic? GM cotton covers more than 15 million hectares on the planet and accounts for more than 70 percent of all cotton grown. Chances are that your cotton swabs and balls are also GM Cotton.

GM crops are claimed by proponents to reduce pesticide use (the term "pesticide" includes herbicides, which technically are pesticides). But this is untrue.

Herbicide-tolerant crops have been developed by agrochemical firms specifically to depend upon agrochemicals and have extended the market for these chemicals. Far from weaning agriculture away from environmentally damaging chemicals, GM technology has prolonged and extended the chemically-based agricultural model. The adoption of GM Roundup Ready crops, especially soy, has caused massive increases in the use of glyphosate worldwide.

Did you know that in your efforts to be healthy you just might be consuming more chemicals than you think? Yup, non-dairy milk may not be all it's cracked up to be. Let's look a little closer at some of the additives in non-dairy milk...

Milk and other dairy products have on the receiving end of bad press for decades already. However, once the "Low Fat" movement kicked off, this bad press virtually became sheer brutality. Everything dairy was suddenly condemned. Everywhere we look we see warnings about the dangers of milk and all products derived from it. Butter in particular suddenly became a mass murderer once low fat margarine arrived on the scene.

You'd have to be living under a rock not to notice that adrenal problems are at epidemic proportions in our modern culture.

The fact that a Starbucks or some other coffee shop is on practically every corner and that the average American now consumes a whopping 180 lbs per year of refined sugars is surely evidence enough. By the way, the 180 lbs of sugar per year figure is a shocking 27% increase just since 2003 when sugar consumption was 142 lbs per person per year! Caffeine and sugar consumed in excess amounts will sucker punch your adrenal glands faster than just about anything else, no doubt about it.
