Food and Nutrition in the News

Edible News

After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

If you aren't aware of the danger genentically modified corn and soy products present to your families diet, continue reading. Find out the latest news and commentary on GMO food sources, eating and buying organic foods, nutritional news, food related health issues and much more.

Is your favorite organic company owned by a huge corporation or is it truly organic and independent? As our favorite organic companies have grown, many of them have also been gobbled up by huge corporations.

While most organic companies pledge to continue their high standards of organic purity upon being bought out, it doesn't always work that way in practice. For example Silk, a popular almond milk brand, actually switched from non-GMO to GMO soybeans without telling their customer base upon being purchased by WhiteWave, a spin-off company of the massive pro-GMO corporation Dean Foods. At the end of the day, buying organic is always a smart decision. But as the Silk and other stories show, buying small and local is usually the best decision.

Last week I was having problems with my digestion, so I stopped eating for a few days. The kind folks at Hospice were alarmed, and sent over a sack filled with different kinds of nutritional "foods" that are designed to keep the life-force strong.

Hospice had the very best of intentions, and I am grateful for their concern. Although I do not wish to malign them in any way, the stuff they sent over was not real FOOD. In fact, I'm outraged at the idea that they feed this stuff to dying people. The first three ingredients in the so-called "pudding" are water, sugar, and corn maltodextrin (a heavily processed starch with a high glycemic index). Yum, yum.

Fresh Eggs Daily put up a Facebook post that has everyone stirred up about how to read egg labels and how most eggs are on average, 45 days (or more) in age. The core theme of the post is understanding how egg producers manipulate labels...

So today (1/19) I was shopping and snapped a few photos of some egg cartons. EVERY date I saw on them was between 352-355, meaning that those eggs were put in that carton on the 352nd-355th day of last year. Add to that the 19 days so far this year, and these eggs have all been in the carton for about a month (and could have been laid up to 30 days prior to that) and check out the Sell by dates - these eggs can still sit on the shelf for a few more weeks.

A poll* of more than 4,200 US consumers conducted in April 2015 by CivicScience shows Americans believe that 'preservatives / chemicals' are significantly more harmful to their heath than added sugar, saturated fat and sodium.

Not surprisingly perhaps, the over 55s (who are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure) were more likely to consider sodium to be harmful than younger people, while parents and grandparents were more concerned about all of the ingredients on the list than people without children.

Beijing has spent billions developing GMO crops in the hopes of securing food for its burgeoning population, but there has not yet been approval for the commercial cultivation of these crops.

Nonetheless, GM corn is already growing in China illegally, causing further distrust in the government's ability to regulate GM crops. In Northeast China farmers are already growing GM corn, and these crops can easily contaminate others which are not genetically modified. This is one of the many concerns the Chinese have concerning biotech seed. A Greenpeace report urges that Beijing will be unable to supervise GM planting once it is given a green light for cultivation, leading to widespread contamination of other crops.

CBS this Morning did a story on GMOs on January 17, 2016 (video length - 10:30). Right from the beginning, the reporting was clearly, once again, extremely deficient of proper research - but this was overshadowed by the obvious bias in favor of GMOs.

The story opened with a brief one-sided look at Hawai'i and GM papayas. The reporter asked a papaya grower if they were safe and the grower assured him that they were because he (and his children) had been consuming them for 20 years. The reporter accepted that as proof that they were therefore safe by insinuation because he didn't offer anything from his extensive research to counter that assertion.

I really despise microwaves. I really always have. Even as a child, I would comment that the microwave would "make the food taste weird." And of course, it most certainly does "make the food taste weird."

Want to make your microwave experience even worse? Heat up something covered in plastic. Toxic chemicals such as BPA, polyethylene terpthalate (PET), benzene, toluene, and xylene are all just the beginning of the ensemble of toxic terror your food will experience when you choose to go this route.

A growing demand for organic food, coupled with healthy eating trends and a preference for premium products, is driving the growth of the natural food preservatives sector, according to a report.

North America was identified as the region currently dominating the food preservative industry, with a 36.5% value share in the food preservatives market in 2013. The report expected this lead to continue in the coming years. While Asia Pacific was identified as following a similar trend, Choudhury believed growth might be restrained by more stringent regulations. "Various food preservatives are currently banned in different part of the world which is acting as a barrier for the food preservatives market. The impact of this restraint is high at present and it is expected to remain so in the next few years," he said. "Developing countries that do not have strong government regulations are expected to witness higher demand for preservatives in the future. It is expected that FDA policies could be revised in the next decade."

There's more than one way to skin a cat. That's especially true when looking at how states are tangling with the dilemma of how to regulate the sale of raw milk.

Raw milk is milk that hasn't been pasteurized with heat to kill pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and campylobacter. The controversy comes because many raw-milk advocates tout it as a natural, clean product that offers a wide range of health benefits, among them preventing digestive upsets and asthma. Many also say it's a matter of food freedom - that consumers should be free to choose what they drink or eat.
