After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. I hear it all the time from my patients: "Dr. Smith, I'm eating just like you told me to -- lots of grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables, nothing fatty or sugary. Now you're recommending supplements, too? Taking so many pills just doesn't seem natural.

It's a perfectly valid question, and one which you may have wondered about at one time or another. I'll tell you exactly what I tell my patients: If you want to fight disease and achieve maximum life span, you can't do it with diet alone. You need the extra nutritional boost that only supplements can provide. Lots of folks take supplements nowadays. For as many as 40 percent of American adults -- about 100 million of us -- these pills have become nutritional staples. They're also the backbone of a thriving, $10-billion-per-year industry. In many ways, supplements are to humans what fertilizer is to plants. Give a plant adequate amounts of sunlight and water, and it will survive. Add some nutrient-rich fertilizer (organic, of course), and the plant will thrive.

There are many health benefits of goat's milk. Here are eleven health benefits, along with and explanation why it's a better choice than cow's milk.

Goat's milk is a much healthier alternative, especially when it is raw and organic. Goats produce about 2% of the global milk supply; people who consume goat's milk cite a lower incidence of allergies and digestive complaints.

OK, well, the extremely biased opinions of the various "beef boards, fish factions, and chicken coalitions" have had their free reign for the last 50 years, so I think it's finally time to hear what the actual doctors have to say...

Bacon's Blood-Balancing Bounty: Several university and medical center studies have shown that including bacon as a regular, moderate part of one's diet naturally works to lower the body's blood pressure and blood sugar levels, helping to prevent and/or alleviate the effects of diabetes, as well as heart disease, stroke and heart attack.

There are articles all over the Internet right now about "fake organic" food from China. Wanting to keep you informed, I read through many of them. The problem was, they all seemed to quote other sources.

First of all, I was surprised to learn how much food the US imports from China: China is the third-largest source of food imports according to a 2009 report by the Economic Research Service (ERS). For example, 60 percent of our apple juice and over half of the garlic we use in the US is from China. The ERS claims that food safety is a critical issue with Chinese imports but that "there are no simple solutions to addressing the safety hazards since they appear to occur in many different types of foods at all links in the supply chain." Reading through the USDA article "Imports From China and Food Safety Issues" is alarming. The FDA regularly refuses shipments from China because of filth, unsafe additives, veterinary drug residues and mislabeling. Filth violations and unsafe additives are the most common violations in Chinese imports and reading what constitutes "filth" is only recommended to those with strong stomachs.

Over the past couple of years, I had the unpleasant experience of having bloodwork done to confirm that I am gluten intolerant, only to have it come back and say, "Nope, you're just crazy."

It's happened to scores of other people, who pass the test for the anti-gliadin antibodies but still know that their health issues directly correlate with what they eat. Now we may know why. The tests were right. I'm not gluten intolerant. I'm poison intolerant.

The average American eats more than 33 pounds of cheese a year. This is according to Neal Barnard, physician and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. And that's a problem, he says.

I'd never before thought in terms of dairy products being addictive (with the personal exception of milk chocolate, I admit). Barnard explains that dairy protein - specifically a protein called casein - has opiate molecules built in. When babies nurse, he notes, they're getting dosed with a mild drug: "Milk contains opiates that reward the baby for nursing."

If you don't have access to fresh organic fruits and vegetables you might be wondering what your options are because non-organic produce can contain pesticides and herbicides like Glyphosate which can severely damage your intestinal tract.

Thankfully, there are certain types of non-organic produce that don't contain a large amounts of pesticides which are relatively safe to consume. In the US these are listed as the "Clean 15". This list is changing every year so make sure you get an up to date list whenever you're shopping.
