After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

I want to eat cows. I want to eat ribs, burgers, steaks and even bottom round roast (the butt). I would love to swim in the fluffy meat pillows of steak goodness, indulging my continuously growing gluttony.

For the typical family of suburbia, waking up at 7 a.m. to go to work, grabbing a convenience-laden breakfast burrito from McDonald's with a side of coffee water is second nature. I get it. Do I care what you eat? No. I couldn't care less, and the last thing I want to do is make you feel guilty. But, what you eat effects what I eat.

My world briefly shuddered on its axis today. For a few hours, I seriously considered trading in my chocolate habit.

Chocolove's new Almonds and Sea Salt in Dark Chocolate bar, which is in fact so new that it is not yet listed on the website. Despite being only 55%, and therefore a far sweeter chocolate base than I'd usually pick, I adore this chocolate.

My oldest daughter surprised me by saying how much she enjoys using her slow cooker, which is a kitchen appliance I associate with my mother, who called it her crock pot.

So, it shouldn't have surprised me to come across a cookbook titled "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook," by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann, while I was browsing for a birthday present for her. There is actually a series of books offering hundreds of recipes for "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker."

It is the culmination of an astonishing scandal that has been steadily building over the past decade. During this time Monsanto's mutated seeds have grown to 90% of the U.S. soy crop and 85% of the corn crop - and wheat is next on their agenda. Their efforts have been marked by corporate bullying and have drawn the attention of the Justice Department who is conducting an antitrust investigation.

The Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act would require mandatory labeling of all GE foods; the other, The Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act, would require mandatory, pre-market safety testing of GE foods. Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to hear a first-time case about the risks of genetically engineered crops. Named Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms, No. 09-475, the case before the high court in an ongoing battle waged by the Center for Food Safety

The modified alfalfa seed at the heart of the dispute has been engineered to be immune to Monsanto's flagship herbicide Roundup. Monsanto intervened in a 2007 federal district court ruling that the Department of Agriculture's approval of GE alfalfa was illegal.

ATHOL -- Adams Farm slaughterhouse has recalled about 2,574 pounds of beef products that may have been contaminated with E. coli, the company's business manager confirmed yesterday.

The voluntary recall was initiated after the state Department of Public Health confirmed that a ground beef sample positive for E. coli was collected during an epidemiological investigation Friday. An illness somewhere in the state prompted the testing, according to state and federal health officials.

A year ago, Mackey came across a book called "The Engine 2 Diet," by an Austin, Texas, firefighter and former professional triathlete named Rip Esselstyn. Basically, you eat plants: you are a rabbit with a skillet. Mackey had been a vegetarian for more than thirty years, and a vegan for five.
