We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

If you aren't aware of the danger genentically modified corn and soy products present to your families diet, continue reading. Find out the latest news and commentary on GMO food sources, eating and buying organic foods, nutritional news, food related health issues and much more.

Is fish safe to eat? That's becoming an incredibly hard question to answer. Typically you want select fresh wild seafood instead of farmed, but avoiding seafood might be a trend of the future.

"As of June, 2015, the radiation in the Pacific Ocean reached the US West Coast; the seafood you've been eating from the Pacific ocean is loaded with Cesium-137 and Strontium-90. Both radioactive. Strontium-90 mimics calcium. It ends up getting deposited in human bones, where the radiation wreaks havoc with bone marrow, causing bone cancers and blood cancers like Leukemia. The radiation in the fish is so terrible that wild-caught Alaskan Salmon, Pacific Herring and Canadian white fish are being found bloody, with cancerous tumors throughout their bodies."

A Florida magistrate ruled this past week that living off the grid is no longer an option in the land of the free.

Special Magistrate Harold S. Eskin ruled Thursday that Robin Speronis violated city codes by refusing to connect to the Cape Coral's water system. Eskin ordered Speronis to pay for water service, adding that her sewer access would be capped until she did, The News-Press reported. "I am in compliance," Speronis told the News-Press. "I'm in compliance of living ... you may have to hook-up, but you don't have to use it. Well, what's the point?"

I found Cass R. Sunstein's May 14 op-ed, "Don't Mandate Labels for Foods With Gene-Altered Ingredients," extremely one-sided. Sunstein never mentioned that over 60 countries in the world now require labeling of foods with genetically modified organisms.

Would over 60 countries have it all wrong? Not really, when you consider that Sunstein's statements about the superior taste and nutrition of GMO food are without foundation. GMOs are cheaper because our government is being controlled by the big rich biotech industries who take your tax dollars to subsidize their dirty GMOs. Nobody is helping the organic farmer like that.

Russian ecologists are calling for a ban on GMO crops in Russia but fear that their calls may go unheeded despite assurances by top officials.

While the safety of GMO foods for humans and animals is yet to be proven, some experiments suggest that they may, after all, be dangerous to human health. "During a research experiment performed in cooperation with the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, we failed to obtain the third generation of laboratory animals fed on GMOs. This shows that there are definite risks to livestock," the source said.

Avoiding the nocive effects of pesticides may be as simple as buying organic foods, states a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which conducted an extensive look into organic produce, dairy products and meat.

Pediatricians concluded that, while nutritionally similar to conventional foods, organic foods may be lower in pesticide residue. Lower-levels of pesticides are an important consideration when it comes to a child's diet.

Two more European countries are rejecting genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Lativia and Greece have specifically said no to growing Monsanto's genetically modified maize, or MON810.

Scotland and Germany were the first countries that booted GMOs. They feared that GMO crops would contaminate the food and beverage and in this order put these industries in dangerous.

Half of children in parts of Wales have never heard of organic food, according to a new survey of the nation's seven- to 15-year-olds.

The study found that awareness of organic food was significantly higher in rural Mid Wales (85%), while the lowest percentage (51%) was recorded from children in the South Wales Valleys. Of the children who were aware of organic produce, almost a quarter (24%) recognised that it was grown with fewer herbicides, pesticides or chemicals, while 19% responded that it was "more naturally produced".

Admit it, when you envision someone who buys "organic," you imagine a tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, granola- eating hippie, right?

Well, I'm here to confess, I once did too. But, now I "get it." Thanks to the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, I've recently had an opportunity to attend several trainings on the philosophy and practices of organic farming. I've come to better understand the reasoning and yes, research behind organic food production.

A prominent Agriculture Department scientist is alleging that he was suspended after complaining that the agency was blocking his research into the harmful effects of pesticides on pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.

In a whistleblower complaint filed Wednesday, Jonathan Lundgren, an entomologist and 11-year veteran of the USDA's Agricultural Research Service, says his supervisors retaliated against him by suspending him initially for 30 days before reducing it to 14 days.
