After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

Tony Katz has an excellent write-up on last week's Rawesome raid, a government action I find absolutely asinine.

Look, I don't care if you want to make the choice to purchased labeled raw dairy or local, organic food. I love to eat massive amounts of homemade beef jerky, young organic coconuts, and oven-baked bacon (don't knock it, only way to do it). I don't want the government busting up in my butcher shop, or any shop, any private facility with proper licensing (copious licensing is soft tyranny) and prevent the private sector, free market exchange of cash for goods. I also don't trust a government that can't find the time to produce a budget, yet can micromanage the citizenry, telling me what I can and cannot eat.

Starbucks, the Seattle-based coffee company, has announced that it is closing 600 of its 6,800 U.S. stores and laying off more than 12,000 employees. During the past year, the stock has dropped nearly 50 percent.

What went wrong at Starbucks? The fact that Americans are dumping their habit of buying overpriced coffee comes as no surprise at this point in time. With the dollar in freefall, increased unemployment, and rising gas and food prices, most people have started to realize the importance of financial restraint, and planning further than their next paycheck.

After an ABC News investigation detailing the use of a cheap meat filler, finely textured lean beef, commonly called pink slime, which is in 70 percent of the ground beef sold at supermarkets.

"BLBT (Boneless Lean Beef Trimmings) is a sustainable product because it recovers lean meat that would otherwise be wasted," he said in a statement. However, the substance, critics said, is more like gelatin than meat, and before Beef Products Inc. found a way to use it by disinfecting the trimmings with ammonia it was sold only to dog food or cooking oil suppliers.

An Oregon peacemaker said she's so incensed by the apparent slaughter of a rare white buffalo calf -deemed "the hope of all nations" by a Lakota Sioux rancher last year - that her organization is donating a white buffalo bull from its herd.

Arby Little Soldier, who owns the Lakota Ranch near the North Texas town of Greenville, said he had hoped the 3,000-pound gift would arrive during a memorial this weekend that was initially intended to celebrate Lightning Medicine Cloud's first birthday, which was May 12. The calf was found dead nearly two weeks ago. "We're trying to surprise everybody," Little Soldier said Friday, while preparing for opening ceremonies that were later cancelled by rain.

Who knew that Alexis Badden Mayer of the Organic Consumers Association would be arrested outside the White House when she attempted to deliver a DVD Petition with over 200,000 names asking to fulfill a campaign promise to label GMO food products?

There is no more basic American right, than to petition the government, to speak up and have your voice heard as a citizen by your elected representatives - but not if you don't have the money to buy access to officials who have become more responsive to the interest groups that finance their elections then the people who elected them. And so it was with the petition that called for the truthful labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). People want to know what they are eating and want food labeling to indicate if the food has been genetically modified.

The White House on Thursday directed the three U.S. agencies that oversee biotech crop products to improve and modernize their regulatory "framework" to boost public confidence in a system that critics call a failure.

The order, announced in a statement by President Barack Obama's Office of Science and Technology Policy, followed demands by consumers, food-related organizations and businesses for tighter U.S. regulation of genetically modified (GMO) crops, amid a nationwide debate over whether they should be labeled. Biotech crops are regulated through the government's "coordinated framework" that involves APHIS, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Management promised to turn around the company's fortunes through innovation and workplace efficiency. It tried a limited-edition return of original banana-cream Twinkies and published The Twinkies Cookbook, which included such half-baked epicurean delights as Twinkie Sushi and Pigs in a Twinkie. But ancient delivery trucks and plant equipment didn't get replaced. The company's pricing often didn't keep pace with that of competitors. And Hostess still had ludicrous work rules.

Lard didn't just fall out of favor. It was pushed. It was a casualty of a battle between giant business and corporate interests.

"These people when they packed their pork, they had a lot of lard left over," says William Shurtleff, an expert on the history of oils and fats who works at the SoyInfo center. The lard sold well, he says. Nobody thought twice about buying it.
