We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

First, let me state that I don't walk around with aluminum foil wrapped around my head in an effort to shield my thoughts from the aliens.

And I'm not trying to spread fear or perpetuate a hoax. What I want to do here is present scientific facts explaining exactly why cooking in the microwave is worse than cooking over the traditional cave-man fire, or your GE stove at home. I was instantly skeptical the first time I heard that microwaving your food was bad. I read about a study that measured nutrients in cooked broccoli [1], comparing it cooked on the stove vs. in the microwave oven.

Have you ever heard of DPA, also called diphenylamine? This is a chemical used widely on apples after they have been harvested. DPA is used to prevent what the industry calls storage scald -brown spots that appear on the fruit.

As a result of tests done in 2010 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) which found 80% of apples on US produce shelves contain on average 0.42 ppm of DPA, Europe will be cutting its imports unless DPA numbers can drastically reduce. How will North Americans respond though? With there being 4 times more DPA than what's allowable in Europe, American standards seem much more lenient and the care taken to protect citizens from hazardous chemicals is not as strict a priority.

When the company's top spokesman died unexpectedly last week, one liberal friend of mine declared on Facebook, "Oh, karma, you crafty bitch." I thought liberals were the ones preaching tolerance?

You may have seen the news late last week about the latest "Presidential Advisory" on dietary fats released from the American Heart Association (AHA) published online in Circulation.

The American Heart Association was founded by a group of cardiologists in 1924. Its purpose is to fight heart disease and stroke by funding research, promoting certain public health policies, and providing education to the public. With heart disease being the leading cause of death in the United States, this is clearly important work, but their effectiveness is clouded by politics and a questionable interpretation of science. They have repeatedly promoted the replacement of saturated fat with omega-6 (inflammatory) polyunsaturated fats in order to reduce heart disease risk, a recommendation that simply has not been supported by current research.

In Colorado, a 13-person SWAT raid on two medical marijuana users began with a kicked-in door and a flash bang grenade. "They acted like they were coming for a big terrorist," Chuck Ball, one of the patients, told KRDO. "They came in here, drug me across the kitchen floor and handcuffed me," he said. "They kept telling me to shut up." Strange, isn't it, that hunches and vague tips about potential marijuana growing (in a state that recently legalized the drug!) is motivation enough to send a SWAT team busting down a door? Compare that to recent reports that police in Cleveland, Ohio ignored years of tips and calls about strange things going on in the home of the three Cleveland men suspected of holding captive, brutally raping and beating three women for nearly a decade.

In March 2012, President Obama quietly signed an Executive Order that has major implications should some sort of national emergency arise, such as enabling the federal government to take over management and distribution of all food and water.

In issuing the order, EO 13603, titled, "National Defense Resources Preparedness," Obama claimed authority under the Defense Production Act of 1950, a Korean War-era statute (50 U.S.C.) (see it here) that gives the government the power to marshal whatever resources are necessary to protect and defend the country during "military conflicts, natural or man-caused disasters, or acts of terrorism within the United States," the statute says.

For the better part of the past century Western pop culture has systematically denigrated and devalued what should be the most honored profession of all.

Those who labor with the land, day-in and day-out, to deliver the food that we eat have assumed a social status too often similar to the dirt of the soil they till. No one stops to ask a simple question: What do we do when we have killed off all our farmers? Some of the more naïve city-dwellers would retort with little reflection, "But we have industrialized food production; we don't need manual farm labor today."

A new report released today, "GMO Myths and Truths",[1] challenges these claims. The report presents a large body of peer-reviewed scientific and other authoritative evidence of the hazards to health and the environment posed by genetically engineered crops and organisms (GMOs). Unusually, the initiative for the report came not from campaigners but from two genetic engineers who believe there are good scientific reasons to be wary of GM foods and crops.
