Food and Nutrition in the News

Edible News

After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

If you aren't aware of the danger genentically modified corn and soy products present to your families diet, continue reading. Find out the latest news and commentary on GMO food sources, eating and buying organic foods, nutritional news, food related health issues and much more.

Reason TV gives a report on the problems plaguing California's Central Valley, once a breadbasket to the world, and now a government-created basket case of dust, unemployment, poverty, and now starvation.

The short documentary focuses on two federal policies that heavily impact the farming region, the first water policy and environmentalism, and the second immigration. Without doubt, immigration policy impacts farming areas like the Central Valley (as well as the Midwestern plains), but the problems in the Central Valley now have nothing to do with federal enforcement of immigration law. The enforcement of the law has been spotty at best during the last three administrations. Nor has Congress done much about it; building a fence on the California border shifted the crossings to Arizona, which has had to deal with the traffic and its attendant issues.

BOSTON -- Organic food is increasingly more popular. But dietitians say shoppers have to be educated about the products because some of them are high in fat and calories, or not really natural at all.

"You need to read the label and have some idea of what your calorie boundaries are," said registered dietician Jen Reid. "Otherwise you are going to wind up with a very high calorie food despite the fact that it's organic or natural," she said.

In Western Australia organic farmer Stephen Marsh has had his organic accreditation suspended after independent testing showed his oats and cereal crops had been contaminated by genetically modified (GM) seeds.

The Liberal Party Barnett Government allowed Genetically Modified (GM) canola crops to be grown commercially early this year, despite warnings that contamination of organically grown crops was a palpable risk. The National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA) is conducting an official investigation.

Washington's organic apple growers need to gain a better understanding of how much of their crop is sold without an organic label, costing them higher prices in the retail market.

Washington leads the nation in organic apple, pear and cherry acreage, primarily in the central, irrigated regions of the state. For the first time in several years, however, organic acres for apples and cherries declined in 2010 -- 6 percent for apples and 12 percent for cherries. Organic pear acreage increased 4 percent.

Britain's Health secretary Andrew Lansley created what he calls five "responsibility deal" networks with businesses, co-chaired by ministers, to write the new policies.

In the decaying British Empire, where there's a government camera on every street corner, Britain's Department of Health has decided to allow fast food companies like McDonald's and KFC, as well as PepsiCo, Kellogg's, and Mars, to craft its official government policy on obesity, alcohol and diet-related disease.

BOSTON -- There's a science to supermarket shopping, according to food marketers. And now spaces are being designed based on what they know about how we shop.

According to George, the market's next challenge is to draw the shopper further into the store. "They're trying to put the hot features in the middle of the aisle so you have to go down there and see those," said George. Research shows a lot of shoppers do a U-turn. They get what they want out of the aisle and then turn back.

There are few things more annoying than people blaming their failures on others. There are few things more ironically humorous than watching a clueless person publicly scold people and in the process reveal his or her own ignorance.

Actually, it was more revealing than McLaughlin realizes. Perhaps she has spent too much time in Barney Frank's district (he was a customer), but businesses don't succeed by telling customers what they should want to buy. Customers have this annoying tendency to know...

Sao Paulo -- A Brazilian court ruled this week that McDonald's must pay a former franchise manager $17,500 because he gained 65 pounds (30 kilograms) while working there for a dozen years.

The 32-year-old man said he felt forced to sample the food each day to ensure quality standards remained high, because McDonald's hired "mystery clients" to randomly visit restaurants and report on the food, service and cleanliness. The man also said the company offered free lunches to employees, adding to his caloric intake while on the job. His identity was not released.

You can be savvy with Whole Foods grocery shopping if you know the tricks of the trade. People are loving organic food, especially with documentaries such as Food Inc. shedding light on unhealthy farming practices.

But going organic can be more expensive, so I turned to Ashley Hawkins, spokesperson of the supermarket chain, for some tips on how to save. Most stores or metro areas have their own Twitter and Facebook pages, and they definitely list deals and specials there.
