Activists of environment pressure group Greenpeace held a demonstration in New Delhi on Thursday protesting the presence of Genetically Modified (GM) ingredients in food products, harmful for humans.

They said that tests conducted at an independent laboratory on products picked up randomly from a supermarket in New Delhi , revealed that Pepsico's Doritos corn chips contain genetically modified Mon 863 and NK603 variety corn ingredients.

A new study shows that exposure to a chemical called diacetyl, a component of artificial butter flavoring, can be harmful to the nose and airways of mice.

Scientists at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), conducted the study because diacetyl has been implicated in causing obliterative bronchiolitis (OB) in humans. OB is a debilitating but rare lung disease, which has been detected recently in workers who inhale significant concentrations of the flavoring in microwave popcorn packaging plants.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) today urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a more comprehensive review of food products from cloned animals and their offspring before lifting a voluntary moratorium on their sale to consumers.

Most attempted clones are grossly defective and are lost early in development (cloning success rates generally range from zero to 20 percent). Defects among cloned animals include overly large fetuses, placental disorders and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
