Food and Nutrition in the News

Edible News

After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

If you aren't aware of the danger genentically modified corn and soy products present to your families diet, continue reading. Find out the latest news and commentary on GMO food sources, eating and buying organic foods, nutritional news, food related health issues and much more.

With temperatures forecast into the 90's today, I thought it would be a good day to serve up this Confetti Ice Wreath to our chickens. It's not only an excellent way to help your chickens cool down in the summer.

Save up those partial bags of frozen vegetables and leftover canned vegetables. Keep freezer burned fruit and those cranberries left over from Thanksgiving. Don't toss out bruised blueberries or mushy raspberries. Collect everything in a freezer bag until you are ready to make your wreath to make an easy, inexpensive summer treat for your chickens.

Papayas are one of the healthiest, most delicious fruits out there. Rich in vitamins A and C for your skin and immune system, full of enzymes that aid digestion and reduce bloating.

Their sweet, tropical taste is also great whether you eat them alone, use them in a smoothie, in a fruit-based salsa, over oatmeal, or even blend them with some citrus to make a salad dressing. However, as you might have already heard, these tropical fruits are also one of the most frequently genetically modified crops, and unless you know what to look out for at the store, it can be tricky to find one that's free of GMOs if it's not labeled organic or GMO-free (most aren't).

This great-value family favourite freezes beautifully and is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, from BBC Good Food magazine.

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large saucepan and fry the mince until browned - you may need to do this in batches. Set aside as it browns. Put the rest of the oil into the pan, add the vegetables and cook on a gentle heat until soft, about 20 mins.

In April 2014, at the age of 22, I was diagnosed with a severe tree nut allergy. Yes -- adult onset food allergies. It started with just tree nuts, and I only reacted if I actually ate one.

I'm a self-sustaining woman; I live on my own, I am in graduate school, I work full time, and I have a man-child (my boyfriend). My world was pretty much turned upside down by these food allergies, and aside from the insurmountable learning curve I have had, and continue to endure, everyday life still proves to be a challenge in ways that most people without food allergies don't even think about. So, the next time you encounter a person with food allergies, I hope you remember some of these points -- even just one would be helpful to know.

Onions are a crucial ingredient in almost any delicious meal. But you might not know that they have some great health benefits, too, and not just when it comes to nutrition!

Simply cut an onion in half and hold it on the burn until the pain goes away. The juices act as an immediate pain reliever, and the onion's natural antiseptic properties can prevent scarring and reduce the risk of infection.

I have a few disclaimers about these crazy rolls, which I made yesterday on a whim since I had half a batch of cinnamon roll dough leftover from Saturday.

I was working with no recipe whatsoever, and had no plan. The idea came together in about 5 minutes. Kind of like my idea to start a blog 10 years ago.

It may sound mind-boggling but it's a true story. An article was published in China, claiming that fake rice is being made using plastic. Unfortunately, it has not created any apparent alarm and no one is doing anything about it.

This is despite the fact that even a trace of plastic in our system could have serious effects on our digestive system and hormones. You cannot afford to imagine the effects if large amount of plastic enters our system. The world knows China for making those creative yet cheap products like tech items, toys and various consumer products. But food is entirely something else and it shouldn't be meddled with. China tops the list for producing pesticides, which also makes it highly likely that the food they produce is also loaded with pesticides.

Eggs are one of the healthiest foods, they are affordable and can be prepared in various ways. They are extremely high in iron, amino acids, and antioxidants. However, you should always choose organic eggs, as they are rich in nutritional value.

Our body produces 11 essential fatty acids, which are essential for the proper body function, and eggs contain 9 more which are needed as well. Namely, according to "Health Center", if the body lacks those 9 essential fatty acids, you may experience chronic fatigue, poor skin and hair, loss of muscle mass, and weakened immune system.
