Garden centers and bloggers have been flooded with queries about genetically-engineered or modified organisms (GMOs).

I'll explain in a different way: we all know that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are parents to Prince Charles, and he and Princess Diana were parents to William and Harry. If they were stabilized, inbred plants instead of humans, Prince Charles and Princess Diana would be F1s (first crosses), and William and Harry would be hybrids, all results of conventional breeding. All 100 percent human. But if someone injected Prince Harry, for example, with plant genes, he might grow a fine head of green grass. Then Prince Harry would be a genetically-engineered organism or GMO, the result of injection of a gene from another Family (plant) into a human member of the animal family. It could not happen in nature, without the intrusion of man.

If you use this common cooking oil thinking it's a healthy choice - think again. Get the scoop on how industry turned a waste product into a kitchen staple.

In 1956, a major cooking oil company published a series of magazine advertisements claiming that "fried foods become light foods" when vegetable oil is used in place of butter or lard. The clear message to health-savvy homemakers was that vegetable oil was a low-calorie solution to the more traditional fats they were cooking with. Millions of well-meaning cooks took the bait and made the switch, thinking their families would be better off as a result.

The invalidation of Kauai's GMO and pesticide law shows how corporations can trump environmental and public health protections by overriding local authorities.

A federal court recently ruled that Kauai County's right-to-know law dealing with genetically modified organisms and pesticides is unenforceable. The court determined that state law preempts the county's local law.

I hear it all the time from my patients: "Dr. Smith, I'm eating just like you told me to -- lots of grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables, nothing fatty or sugary. Now you're recommending supplements, too? Taking so many pills just doesn't seem natural.

It's a perfectly valid question, and one which you may have wondered about at one time or another. I'll tell you exactly what I tell my patients: If you want to fight disease and achieve maximum life span, you can't do it with diet alone. You need the extra nutritional boost that only supplements can provide. Lots of folks take supplements nowadays. For as many as 40 percent of American adults -- about 100 million of us -- these pills have become nutritional staples. They're also the backbone of a thriving, $10-billion-per-year industry. In many ways, supplements are to humans what fertilizer is to plants. Give a plant adequate amounts of sunlight and water, and it will survive. Add some nutrient-rich fertilizer (organic, of course), and the plant will thrive.

The Pana, Ill.-area farmer had been using corn and soybean seeds genetically modified to work with glyphosate - the generic name for Monsanto's signature Roundup herbicide. But he reached a point at which he said it no longer made sense.

So he turned his back on GMO crops. "As they added more traits, we didn't really see a yield advantage. And every time they added a trait, they added cost," said Beyers, who also worries that GMO seeds could be damaging his soil.

Ken Buesseler, an ocean scientist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said that recent social media articles about Fukushima's impacts on the Pacific (and to people who use it) have been 'very alarmist and you can blame that on the fear of cancer.

Really? Gosh, Ken! What's wrong with having fear of cancer? And are you saying that we are exaggerating our fears of radiation exposures like B-movie filmmakers do when they have us believe that radioactive accidents can mutate creatures into apocalyptic, city-destroying monsters? It is a fact that radiation mutates. You wouldn't be Ken Buesseler had radiation not mutated our common simian ancestors into Homo sapiens. That is a role that radiation has played in evolution although the vast, vast, vast majority of mutations are not advantageous to a species.

Food manufacturers have attempted to demonize eggs for decades as it is infinitely more profitable to convince the public to eat Egg Beaters and processed vegetable oils.

The only way to get truly healthy eggs where you can be sure the hens are not abused is to buy local from a farmer you trust. There is no way around this folks that I have found. You must get off your duff and start connecting with the people in your community if you really want to source some decent eggs! Folks in my buying club regularly tell me how shocked they are when they run out of the eggs sourced locally and buy a carton of organic eggs from the store how puny, pathetic and bland tasting they are. They are also incredibly expensive.

Between 2012 and mid-2014, Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) successfully blocked GMO labeling legislation in over 30 states, at a price tag of more than $100 million.

These funds were received from the 300+ members of the GMA, which include chemical/pesticide, GE seed, and processed food industries. Together, these industries are working in a symbiotic fashion to grow, subsidize, and manufacture foods that have been clearly linked to growing obesity and chronic disease epidemics. According to the most recent analysis, opponents of GMO labeling spent more than $27 million on lobbying in the first six months of this year alone. This is about three times more than they spent during all of 2013, when they shelled out $9.3 million.

I really despise microwaves. I really always have. Even as a child, I would comment that the microwave would "make the food taste weird." And of course, it most certainly does "make the food taste weird."

Want to make your microwave experience even worse? Heat up something covered in plastic. Toxic chemicals such as BPA, polyethylene terpthalate (PET), benzene, toluene, and xylene are all just the beginning of the ensemble of toxic terror your food will experience when you choose to go this route.

Check out the video link and you'll see an entire museum of Big Macs and hamburgers spanning the years -- none of which have decomposed.

The truth is many processed foods don't decompose and won't be eaten by molds, insects or even rodents. Try leaving a tub of margarine outside in your yard and see if anything bothers to eat it. You'll find that the margarine stays seems immortal, too!
