If you care about your health and want to avoid chronic disease, then I recommend that you avoid vegetable oils as if your life depended on it... because it really does.

You've probably heard of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids before. These fatty acids are polyunsaturated, meaning that they have many double bonds in their chemical structure. They are often termed the essential fatty acids, because the body lacks the enzymes to produce them.

The second phase of the bird flu vaccination campaign has started in Mexico, where nearly 11 million birds have been slaughtered to prevent the spread of the AH7N3 avian flu virus, the National Food Health, Safety and Quality Service, or Senasica, said.

The vaccination campaign's second phase is being launched at poultry farms in the Los Altos region of the western state of Jalisco, the Senasica said. Some 90 million doses of the vaccine will be used in the second phase of the campaign, whose first phase resulted in the use of 88.3 million doses of the vaccine, the federal agency said.

The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that protect global and individual health, produces the Shoppers' Guide to Pesticides in Produce. It is based on the results of nearly 43,000 pesticide tests.

Food grown in healthier soil, with natural fertilizers and no chemicals, simply has to be more nutritious. It is common knowledge -- though knowledge that is greatly suppressed in the United States. But science is catching up, making suppression of this fact more difficult to sustain.

You think the FDA has your back?

Sure, they recently proposed two new regulations to up food safety measures, specifically how food processors and farmers can work better to keep their fresh products free of dangerous bacteria (remember that killer cantaloupe outbreak from 2011?). But while it may seem like the government is out to protect us from bad-even fatal-food-borne illnesses, which cause some 3,000 deaths a year, they don't completely have our best interest-or health-in mind. "For numerous suspicious and disturbing reasons, the U.S. has allowed foods that are banned in many other developed countries into our food supply," says nutritionist Mira Calton who, together with her husband Jayson Calton, Ph.D., wrote the new book Rich Food, Poor Food due out in February.

Cinnamon is a powerful spice that has been used medicinally around the world for thousands of years. It is still used daily in many cultures because of its widespread health benefits, not to mention its distinctly sweet.

The unique smell, color, and flavor of cinnamon is due to the oily part of the tree that it grows from. The health benefits of cinnamon come from the bark of the Cinnamomum tree. This bark contains several special compounds which are responsible for its many health promoting properties- including cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and cinnamate. Researchers have concluded that the health benefits of cinnamon can be obtained in the form of its pure bark, essential oils, in ground spice form (which is bark powder), or in extract form when its special phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidants are isolated.

Officials in Riverside, Calif., said they were disappointed to find out more than 13,000 boxes of unsold Girl Scout cookies were thrown away instead of donated.

A video of a tractor trashing the cookies before they were sent to a landfill was posted online in May, CBS Los Angeles reported. In the video, a worker can be heard laughing and saying "Goodbye, Girl Scout cookies!" Pastor Cathy Purden of the Rock of the Valley Church in Van Nuys saw the video and said: "That's something those children could have had, cookies. "You stop and think about how many little children would be excited if you gave them a box of Girl Scout cookies. I would be excited. I buy them," Purden said.

As anyone who's ever cleaned up after a dinner party knows, Americans waste a lot of food. In addition to the fruit, vegetables, and other items that go bad in our own kitchens, farmers and grocery stores toss unused goods as well.

According to Jonathan Bloom, author of American Wasteland, it adds up to at least 160 billion pounds of wasted food each year. The problem is considered so serious that food industry groups have launched an initiative to reduce the amount of food that ends up in landfills while increasing the amount that goes to food banks.
