Food and Nutrition in the News

Edible News

After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

If you aren't aware of the danger genentically modified corn and soy products present to your families diet, continue reading. Find out the latest news and commentary on GMO food sources, eating and buying organic foods, nutritional news, food related health issues and much more.

Learn the facts about California's Proposition 37 Right To Know campaign to label genetically engineered foods.

What is Proposition 37? Proposition 37 is a common-sense November ballot measure that will help consumers make informed choices about the food they eat. Written with broad input from food groups, industry, science, legal and health experts Prop. 37 (The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act) requires clear labels letting consumers know if foods are genetically modified.

When the going gets tough, the tough (and smart) get going to health retreats. This has been my fallback position for almost a decade now since I started searching for ways to reset in an increasingly manic life.

Organic devotees are attracted by the prospect of clean food devoid of harmful pesticides that tastes as it should and a diet built of produce that is seasonal and fresh. But unless you live in Queensland where the culture and the climate make for easy organic pickings, tracking down the good stuff can be tricky. Not to mention that organic food is still relatively expensive compared to conventional produce. Some consider it the domain only of "the rich".

Perhaps you've heard me or other bloggers profess our love for raw milk. "What's the big deal with raw milk? What makes it so special?" you may wonder.

Well, when it comes to comparing raw milk and regular (a.k.a. pasteurized milk), they are two entirely different substances. Raw milk is a living food, full of digestion-enhancing enzymes. Pasteurized milk, on the other hand, is a dead food that is highly allergenic and difficult to tolerate. Here are 6 reasons why raw milk beats pasteurized milk:

Why is cupric sulfate - a known herbicide, fungicide and pesticide - being used in infant formula? And why is it displayed proudly on product labels as a presumably nutritious ingredient?

Used to kill fungus, aquatic plants and roots of plants, parasitic infections in aquarium fish and snails, as well as algae and bacteria such as Escherichia coli, cupric sulfate hardly sounds fit for human consumption, much less for infants. Indeed, infants are all too often looked at as "miniature adults" from the perspective of toxicological risk assessments, rather than what they are: disproportionately (if not exponentially) more susceptible to the adverse effects of environmental exposures. Instead of reducing or altogether eliminating avoidable infant chemical exposures (the precautionary principle), the chemical industry-friendly focus is always on determining "an acceptable level of harm" - as if there were such at thing!

I was asked this week to speak about the effects of genetically modified foods on the cardiovascular system for a group of health care providers and the public.

Was I shocked to learn that eating GMO foods can increase the rate of heart attacks, strokes, and bypass surgeries in multiple medical studies in humans? No ... because these studies don't exist. In fact, I couldn't present a clear scientific argument linking GMO foods with the development of heart disorders. I'm not an alarmist and I believe in the scientific process. However, on a personal level, I've instituted tighter rules in my home about food purchases. The more I learned about GMOs, the more I decided to just say no.

I understand that there are a number of Republicans (including Yours Truly) who are currently campaigning to become delegates to the Republican National Convention who have formerly expressed support for the presidential candidate, Ron Paul.

Like me, they may be running into some questions about their loyalty to the "presumptive candidate", Mitt Romney. For that reason, and others that I will soon explain, I thought it was high time for me to officially switch my support from Ron Paul and go on record endorsing Mitt Romney for President of the United States.

Processed meats like hot dogs, baloney and chicken nuggets seem, on the surface, no less icky than pink slime. And here's why they could be even worse.

If there's one thing America can agree on, it's that "pink slime" is scary. The hamburger filler made from processed beef trimmings has been in use for decades, but now, thanks to social media-fueled campaigns and traditional media coverage from Fox News to MSNBC, we're suddenly terrified of the stuff. But is pink slime really any worse than pink cylinders like hot dogs, or yellow nuggets of mechanically separated poultry?

Glyphosate has contaminated land, water, air, and our food supply; the maximum permitted levels are set to rise by100-150 times in the European Union if Monsanto gets its way as damning evidence of serious harm to health & the environment piles up.

The use of glyphosate-based herbicides, especially Monsanto's Roundup formulation, has increased dramatically since the introduction of genetically modified (GM) glyphosate-tolerant crops, resulting in the contamination of our food, environment and water supplies. Glyphosate-based herbicides are now the most commonly used herbicides in the world. It is still promoted as 'safe', despite damning evidence of serious harm to health and the environment.

Aren't critics of genetically engineered food anti-science? Isn't the debate over GMOs (genetically modified organisms) a spat between emotional but ignorant activists on one hand and rational GM-supporting scientists on the other?

A new report released today, "GMO Myths and Truths",[1] challenges these claims. The report presents a large body of peer-reviewed scientific and other authoritative evidence of the hazards to health and the environment posed by genetically engineered crops and organisms (GMOs). Unusually, the initiative for the report came not from campaigners but from two genetic engineers who believe there are good scientific reasons to be wary of GM foods and crops.

Over the past few years, an interesting pattern has emerged, where political supporters of genetically engineered (GE) foods are feasting on organics, while promoting unlabeled GE foods for everyone else.

Most recently, Mother Jones1 discussed how Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney - whose ties to Monsanto go back to the late 1970's when GE crops were still in the R&D phase - reportedly makes sure his own meals are nothing but organic.
