Food and Nutrition in the News

Edible News

After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

If you aren't aware of the danger genentically modified corn and soy products present to your families diet, continue reading. Find out the latest news and commentary on GMO food sources, eating and buying organic foods, nutritional news, food related health issues and much more.

Or, to be more precise, demanding that supplement companies do it on their orders. Action Alert! The US Food and Drug Administration has recently issued warning letters to two different supplement companies.

Here is what triggered one of them: supplement company AMARC Enterprises "liked" a Facebook customer testimonial about how their product helped "keep cancer at bay." FDA says this means AMARC made a disease claim. Note that the customer did not even say that the product cured cancer, just that it helped keep the customer free of cancer.

Is food irradiation good enough that we could theoretically go back to having rare hamburgers, soft-boiled eggs and unpasteurized milk? I miss all of those!

Irradiation doesn't make food perfectly safe. While it can reduce microorganisms, it doesn't entirely eliminate them. And while it reduces bacteria levels, it's not effective when it comes to viruses or prions (which are responsible for Mad Cow Disease, and, as far as I can tell, cannot be eliminated by God).

Which organic brands really believe in organic-and which are working behind the scenes to betray natural health consumers? It's time for a boycott. Action Alert!

Many natural and organic brands are actually owned by huge conglomerates that don't support sustainable, organic, non-GMO, non-toxic agriculture. In fact, their product labels are often designed to mislead consumers just so they can grab a share of the lucrative health-conscious consumer market. Even worse, many of the conglomerate companies that produce so-called natural foods-and even some labeled "organic"-are allied with the biotech industry fighting by any means to defeat "Label GMO," a.k.a. Prop 37, the California Right to Know 2012 Ballot Initiative. Why are they doing such a thing? Because they sell more food that has GMO ingredients than organic food, and don't want consumers to have a choice about the GMO. They especially don't want consumers to know what is actually in their so-called "natural" products.

Scientists have created the ultimate GM crop: contraceptive corn. Waiving fields of maize may one day save the world from overpopulation.

The pregnancy prevention plants are the handiwork of the San Diego biotechnology company Epicyte, where researchers have discovered a rare class of human antibodies that attack sperm. By isolating the genes that regulate the manufacture of these antibodies, and by putting them in corn plants, the company has created tiny horticultural factories that make contraceptives. 'We have a hothouse filled with corn plants that make anti-sperm antibodies,' said Epicyte president Mitch Hein.

Last week a Minnesota man charged with violating the state's restrictions on raw milk sales was acquitted in what he and his supporters called a victory for consumer freedom.

Alvin Schlangen is a peaceful farmer who connects people with the food sources that meet their high standards for health by providing private access under lawful ownership of farm animals. the member owners pay the Amish farm family for labor to milk the leased 100% grass-fed cows, manage the pasture, store the feed, etc. This co op is a sustainable farming effort where the value of food supports the cost incurred, without government subsidies or harm to the environment. The balance of food options are purchased by the club, for the members. The group has multiple farm sources providing real food to member families- very efficiently, with lots of volunteer effort.

This is almost a silly question, and up until about 75 years ago would also be considered a silly question to the average person. The fact is that humans have stored food for thousands of years because their lives would often depend on it.

To some degree we still collectively store food; the U.S. government does have food reserves. However, with growing corporate agriculture, growing government, and growing industry the idea has fallen by the wayside. This is unfortunate because this now archaic practice is still important and can save your butt in a storm, a family or financial crisis, or an emergency.

On the way to the screening, I picked up a pack of Doritos. How's that for defiance? Here's why. Look at the package: Doritos with cheese is made with whole corn and vegetable oil; so far so good.

One cannot help feeling guilty for consuming this after seeing Jean-Paul Jaud's documentary, "Food Beware," whose subject matter is more accurate in its French title, "Nos enfants nous accuseront," or "Our children will accuse us." Why does Jean-Paul Jaud believe organic food is so necessary that he's ready to start a revolution to get French kids to insist on it?

Many aspects of modern technology make people a bit uneasy, but genetically modified foods may be in a class by themselves. Labs all around the world make genetic modifications of organisms-bacteria, plants, and animals-365 days a year.

And some of the results of that work have been ingested by humans for years, often in the form of life-saving drugs. But genetically modified crops remain controversial around the globe, and while they're commonly used in the US, they have almost no presence in the European market. The worries about GMO foods largely focus on their safety, but much of the debate ignores the extensive studies that have been done to understand both the potential risks and what we've learned about them. In response to this perceived gap in understanding, a group of Italian scientists have now performed a comprehensive review of the scientific literature on GMO crops (we were made aware of the review by Real Clear Science). The results suggest that GMO crops are safe for us, but there are some remaining concerns about their environmental impact that need to be nailed down. In the meantime, the authors suggest that GMOs represent a serious challenge for science communication with the public.
