House Bill 4455, Introduced by Rep. DeRossett would permit full and part-time caregivers of children under age 4 to postpone jury duty is stalled in the House Judiciary Committee. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Howell has requested an opinion on the bill from the Michigan Judges' Association.
This legislation is necessary to ensure
If Michigan is going to be a family friendly state we must insure that the children of our state come first.
In recent years it has become more difficult to find competent child care. With the rise of inadequate child care choices due to reports of abuse, neglect and rising costs, more women are choosing to stay home and care for their own children. Fewer women are working outside of the home.
More parents are coming to realize the health advantages to breastfeed infants and are choosing not to bottle feed. It can be a challenge for breastfeeding mothers to provide for the nutrition of her child while she is away from home. The stress alone can interfere with her milk supply.
What is good for the children must be good for our state. When a mother chooses to stay home to care for her children, this family makes sacrafices in order to live on one income. In our mobile society, close family members are not always nearby to lend a hand as in days gone by.
Families often cannot afford to pay child care costs, even if they are able to find someone they would feel comfortable leaving their precious little one with.
It is with this in mind that we request the passage of House Bill 4455.
Please write to Rep. Howell and ask that action be taken on this legislation soon. It would be beneficial to have a new flurry of calls and e-mails to let the members of the Judiciary Committee know that we have not forgotten about this issue. Calls can be made to some or all of the committee members, or to the Chairman, Jim Howell. If you are Mr. Howell's constituent, all the better!
