Immunization News provides current news articles, covering issues ranging from HIV and Cancer vaccines, to routine innoculations for children as well as the latest Swine Flu scare.

Get the facts before you or your children are vaccinated with any shot or nasal spray. Having a child vaccinated is the most important decision most parents will ever make. The Republican presidential primary has become a bit feisty, but it will get downright ugly if Ron Paul wins the Iowa caucuses.

The principled, antiwar, Constitution-obeying, Fed-hating, libertarian Republican congressman from Texas stands firmly outside the bounds of permissible dissent as drawn by either the Republican establishment or the mainstream media. (Disclosure: Paul wrote the foreword to my 2009 book.) But in a crowded GOP field currently led by a collapsing Newt Gingrich and an uninspiring Mitt Romney, Paul could carry the Iowa caucuses, where supporter enthusiasm has so much value. If Paul wins, how will the media and the GOP react?

Preschoolers may signal the arrival of flu season. Thirty days after hacking three- and four-year-olds start showing up in doctors' offices and emergency rooms, flu-ridden adults follow.

It's a provocative discovery sure to bolster growing calls to vaccinate more healthy children against influenza - to help keep the misery from spreading. Moreover, researchers using a system that almost instantly tracks Boston-area health care found that a spike in respiratory illness among youngsters under five predicts that about five weeks later, influenza-related deaths among the elderly will peak.

A federal district judge in Brooklyn rules that a New York City policy of keeping non-vaccinated children out of school during exposure risk does not violate constitutional rights.

Immunization rates among school-aged children have dropped significantly in the last two decades. The decline is directly attributable to the misguided fears about the safety of vaccinations, a belief started by thoroughly debunked research which linked vaccines to the rise in autism. Schools have always required children to be up to date on their vaccinations when enrolling. Exemptions are allowed for those with documented medical reasons, as well as religious beliefs. While these exemptions are still rare, the increase in religious (and in some states personal belief) exemptions have led to a precipitous decline in vaccinated children. It has also led to a public health crisis of major outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases.

Vegans and vegetarians need to be aware of the breaking news stories that bloggers are having a field day with, about specific ingredients from animal sources in vaccines.

The first I learned of the 'cultured in dog kidney cells' issue with the new Medi-Mumps vaccine was from an article posted in Vactruth.com. A bit later, NaturalNews broke the story and it has taken off from there. In case you are one of those people who don't feel these publications or anyone's blog on these issues holds up to scrutiny, then that is your decision and read no further. However there may be many of you, especially vegans and vegetarians, who will want to know about this, if you have missed these controversial articles and blogs.

Aid groups planned to launch an emergency vaccination campaign in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Monday in a bid to ward off measles, diphtheria and tetanus.

Starting with about 1,800 people at a camp on the old airport runway in the Haitian capital, the international Red Cross federation, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Haitian Health Ministry hope to vaccinate about 140,000 people in the earthquake-ravaged country.

Some people in Doaktown are fighting the suspension of the community's X-ray technician, who refused to get a hepatitis B vaccination.

Janet Hughes says she previously accepted mandatory vaccines for measles, tetanus and whooping cough. But she refused the hepatitis B injection because she believes she was infected with hepatitis C when she was younger and feared the vaccine might cause a negative reaction. New Brunswick's Horizon Health Network suspended her without pay three months ago. Hughes contends it's a human rights issue.

Do thousands of Canadians really die every year from the flu? The flu folks keep saying so. I've already heard it repeated several times this year and flu season has just started.

This is what the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a recent press release: "Every year, between 2,000 and 8,000 Canadians die of the flu and its complications." In a CBC interview a few weeks ago an editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal said: "Four thousand to 8,000 people die every year of influenza." It comes directly from the desk of Canada's chief public health officer. "The flu is serious," he tells us from his website. "Every year, between 2,000 and 8,000 Canadians die of the flu and its complications." Did you ever wonder how they know that? The fact is, they don't know that. "This is a scientific guess. This is not the truth," Dr. Michael Gardam, director of the infection prevention and control unit at the University Health Network in Toronto and a longtime flu watcher, told me.

The parents of 12-year-old Michelle Cedillo asked a federal court to find that their child's autism was caused by common childhood vaccines, a precedent-setting case that could pave the way for thousands of autistic children to receive compensation.

Special Master George Hastings Jr. thanked the family for allowing theirs to be the first of nine test cases that will help guide the resolution of some of the nearly 5,000 similar claims lodged with the government.

Since mid-2011, a substantial rise in pertussis cases has been reported in the state of Washington. In response to this increase, the Washington State Secretary of Health declared a pertussis epidemic on April 3, 2012.

By June 16, the reported number of cases in Washington in 2012 had reached 2,520 (37.5 cases per 100,000 residents), a 1,300% increase compared with the same period in 2011 and the highest number of cases reported in any year since 1942. To assess clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory factors associated with this increase, all pertussis cases reported during January 1-June 16, 2012, were reviewed. Consistent with national trends, high rates of pertussis were observed among infants aged <1 year and children aged 10 years. However, the incidence in adolescents aged 13-14 years also was increased, despite high rates of vaccination with tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, suggesting early waning of immunity. The focus of prevention and control efforts is the protection of infants and others at greatest risk for severe disease and improving vaccination coverage in adolescents and adults, especially those who are pregnant. Pertussis vaccination remains the single most effective strategy for prevention of infection.

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Each year the USDA deploys hundreds of thousands of rabies oral vaccination baits to help stop the spread of this infectious disease. And on Monday, baits were spread across Northern New York, including all of St. Lawrence.

The baits are only a little bigger than a quarter. It's encased by a block of fish or dog meal with a packet of liquid vaccine inside. "When the animal bites into the packet it releases the liquid and they swallow it and become vaccinated in that manner," says Barney.
