International health experts and disaster management coordinators will discuss cooperation in the event of a bird flu outbreak at a major conference to begin in Brisbane.

Delegates at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting on Monday are expected to consider issues such as border closures, anti-viral drugs and how to maintain essential services during an outbreak. The two-day "Avian and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness and Response" conference follows reports last week of China's third bird flu outbreak in two weeks.

NEW YORK - An advisory committee of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that hepatitis A vaccination be included in the routine vaccination schedule of U.S. children.

Hepatitis A -- a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus -- can affect anyone. In the U.S., hepatitis A can occur in situations ranging from isolated cases of disease to widespread outbreaks. Good personal hygiene and proper sanitation can help prevent hepatitis A. Vaccines are also available for long-term prevention of hepatitis A virus infection.

As panic spreads over avian flu, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant is accused of putting profits before people.

For the obsessively guarded, conservatively dressed and unflamboyant Oeri, Hoffman and Sacher families, avian flu could be good news. Over the next two years, the heirs of Fritz Hoffman, founders of Roche, one of the world's most powerful pharmaceutical companies, and who already rank as among the world's richest families, could see their combined £10 billion fortune reach giddy heights.

The first outbreak of polio in the United States in 26 years occurred earlier this fall in an Amish community in central Minnesota, state and federal health officials reported yesterday.

Four children have been infected with the virus, although none has become paralyzed. The Amish typically decline to vaccinate their children. The last large outbreak of polio occurred in numerous Amish communities in several states in 1979.

Preschoolers may signal the arrival of flu season. Thirty days after hacking three- and four-year-olds start showing up in doctors' offices and emergency rooms, flu-ridden adults follow.

It's a provocative discovery sure to bolster growing calls to vaccinate more healthy children against influenza - to help keep the misery from spreading. Moreover, researchers using a system that almost instantly tracks Boston-area health care found that a spike in respiratory illness among youngsters under five predicts that about five weeks later, influenza-related deaths among the elderly will peak.

There is a new concept in vaccination practices these days. If for some reason you cannot vaccinate group A - or if such vaccination is not effective - then vaccinate group B instead.

Cocchi told the Associated Press, “With more toddlers than ever being protected, the CDC reminded parents that adolescents need their shots, too. Among them, a new whooping-cough booster shot for teenagers and pre-teens was approved earlier this year to combat a return of that disease as childhood vaccine protection wanes …That booster dose is crucial because, while whooping cough seldom kills older children, it can be fatal to newborns who haven't yet started their immunizations. Already this year, 15 infants have died from whooping cough.”

Safety concerns have become the biggest obstacle for urban parents who wish to get their children inoculated against influenza.

According to survey results released yesterday, 26 per cent of parents chose not to have their children inoculated, saying they are worried about vaccine's reliability. Concerns about the necessity and convenience of the flu vaccine also topped a list of reasons concerning them.

Siobhan O'Neill was told the new five-in-one jab might leave her daughter irritable for a day or two. No one mentioned the possibility of serious side-effects lasting up to a week

So why did our baby continue to have a high temperature' Why was she listless and pale' Why less interactive' Why did she have that odd glassy stare and seem completely different to the way she was before we apparently poisoned her'

Officials within the FDA and CDC, are always claiming that researchers and scientists who conduct studies, not funded by drug companies or the government, are making unfounded claims about a link between thimerosal-laced vaccines and autism.

I say cut the crap.

Think about it. Why would so many highly respected scientists, researchers and physicians go to such great lengths to concoct bogus studies and issue false reports, in essence putting their professional reputations on the line, if their was no connection'

I want these officials to do two things. First I want them to give me one good reason why these professionals would make this up, and two, I want them to give me one logical alternative theory for the current epidemic of disorders.

Common Dreams

When a study revealed that mercury in childhood vaccines may have caused autism in thousands of kids, the government rushed to conceal the data and to prevent parents from suing drug companies for their role in the epidemic.

In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference center in Norcross, Ga. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session -- only private invitations to 52 attendees.

There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva, and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly "embargoed." There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.
