Parents don't not leave their kids alone because they fear something might happen to them. They fear the moral disapproval. Only in the past decade or so has "no child left alone" become the social and legal norm in the U.S.

News reports and crime shows feed exaggerated fears. But Thomas and her co-authors note that legal norms needn't follow inaccurate beliefs about risks. "The fact that many people irrationally fear air travel does not result in air travel being criminalized," they write. "Parents are not arrested for bringing their children with them on airplanes. In contrast, parents are arrested and prosecuted for allowing their children to wait in cars, play in parks, or walk through their neighborhoods without an adult."

We launched AdSense for mobile content before the smartphone revolution when everyone had a flip phone.

Our goal was to help pioneering publishers monetize their mobile content. Since then, we've seen mobile technology advance and an increasing number of consumers are viewing content from "smarter" mobile devices. To make it easier for publishers to use AdSense to monetize mobile web pages, we've migrated all mobile ad unit sizes, including the mobile banner ad unit, into the core product.

We could, and should, all integrate workflow optimization into our working practices.

Perhaps we should warn you upfront for the long compilation, but what can we say - there are so many excellent tools out there which deserve attention of the community, yet unfortunately remain obscure way too often. We love all the designers and developers out there for releasing and producing useful, valuable resources for all of us to use! We, for one, surely sincerely appreciate it in the name of the Web design community. Whether you like it or not, here are some of the most useful coding and workflow tools released recently.

The San Jose Police Department has become the first Bay Area law enforcement agency to acquire a drone, department officials confirmed Wednesday, but guidelines for its use have not been developed.

Department officials got the unmanned aircraft in January for just under $7,000 in federal grant money for the purpose of aiding the department bomb squad in assessing threats, police spokesman Officer Albert Morales told The Chronicle. Because the Century NEO 660 V2 hexacopter was purchased with federal grant money, Morales said, the drone will be available to 13 other bomb squads around the Bay Area, including agencies in San Francisco and Oakland. San Jose police have kept this information mostly under wraps, but a records request by Vice's Motherboard and MuckRock made the purchase public - after officials initially denied the claims.

Of all the battlefields we've witnessed in the browser wars, this one's never really crossed our minds before: energy efficiency.

Yes, the power efficiency of a piece of software, not hardware, is being touted by Microsoft as a differentiating feature for its fresh new Internet Explorer 9. It's thrown together the top five most popular browsers and put them through a cycle of benchmarks -- including Microsoft's own FishIE Tank graphics acceleration test, but not the somewhat popular Adobe Flash -- while measuring how much power they use beyond what the underlying Windows 7 system needs to keep itself going.

Recently I had a very sobering experience that demonstrated just how serious the threat of hacked WordPress sites is. I discovered hidden link injections in some posts on a few of my old sites.

These are sites that I no longer actively maintain, they were kind of neglected, and haven't been updated in a while. The hack inserted links to drug sites (the viagra and cialis bunch) using "display: none" attribute to hide them from the page. I think Google disregards these hidden type of links, but having them can penalize your site nevertheless.

At ManageWP we are obsessed with speed. With the recent launch of our new dashboard we improved loading times for the application by almost 100% in some areas.

We also invest time in optimising our server setup for optimum performance. We already run the optimised "WordPress stack" - PHP 5.4.x, nginx with PHP-FPM and Percona MySQL. Today we explored the Zend Optimizer+ opcode cache for PHP...

Welcome to Part III of the ManageWP Story -- a series of posts that will tell the ManageWP story from its humble beginnings right up to present day.

Part II finished with me feeling a mixture of pride in my progress to date and frustration with not yet having created something really groundbreaking. I had built a successful business and even had a small team around me, but my heart wasn't truly in WordPress website development. I knew that I wanted to take a step beyond. So how did I change my fortunes? Read on to find out!

The new liberal censoriousness and its growing list of targets.

"I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Believers in free speech and civil liberties, many of them liberals, have repeated this Voltaire quote so many times it has become a cliche. Some even applied this principle to excess, treating topless dancing the same as political speech and defending neo-Nazis who wanted to march through a community of Holocaust survivors. There is no right to yell "fire" in a crowded theater. But the principle itself is essential to a free society. Voltaire has since been replaced by Ring Lardner: "Shut up he explained."
