What message are our legislators sending to voters, when they publicly admit they haven't done their job? How many bills are passed each year that policymakers haven't even bothered to read? This is disgraceful. This is called dereliction of duties and we must demand a stop to this practice.

As Congress foams at the mouth over financial fraud perpetrated on Enron shareholders and employees, it's allowing the Environmental Protection Agency to perpetrate a much more costly fraud on all of us.

The researchers had no data on how much fine particulate air pollution was inhaled by even one of the 500,000 study subjects. Instead the researchers simply guessed at how much fine particulates study subjects might have inhaled - more like eeny-meeny-miny-mo than science.

No longer do we learn through subject and verb, but rather through a verbal hybrid of images and slogans designed to spare us the rigors of closely examining issues for ourselves.

Our preoccupation with television imagery has helped make this generation curiously artificial and particularly susceptible to the counterfeit. Essayist Michael J Arlen has called it "The tyranny of the visual." And countless other critics have lamented about the perils of images supplanting words in this culture.

The Chatham Daily News reported two dozen angry bar owners protested the smoking ban at a recent Chatham-Kent council meeting, by staging a huge smoke-in at City Council.

What makes the story even more ironic is that many quoted were not even smokers themselves. In the last fiscal year, with a $38 billion deficit looming, did you think our state legislators would have been busy focusing on the important crisis before them-

Naaah, they were gleefully preoccupied with prying into the details of your personal business just so your life could be made even more miserable than it already soon will be. You can thank California's Demo-controlled Legislature for putting a witch's brew of really appalling, privacy-invading and intrusive legislation on the menu.

Last Tuesday's "Rock the Vote" debate among Democratic presidential hopefuls solidifies that conclusion.

Aside from the usual attempts to be hip (including discussion of marijuana and who is best to party with), the most revealing incident in the debate was when Al Sharpton questioned Howard Dean on his October comment about the Confederate flag. Dean was quoted in the Des Moines Register as saying, "I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks." He later apologized for the remark.

Note: David N. The public schools are on a campaign to save their schools - but, more importantly, their jobs.

Our public schools have become very savvy over the years at using the media for their purposes. They have used it for fund-raising, to pass mileage levies against taxpayers, to influence public opinion and now to discredit homeschooling.
