What message are our legislators sending to voters, when they publicly admit they haven't done their job? How many bills are passed each year that policymakers haven't even bothered to read? Even before the Supreme Court ended its last term in early July, media pundits had reached a verdict on its significance: The Court had lurched to the right.

As usual, Anthony Lewis of the New York Times gave the charge its most strident formulation. The "stunned reaction among the public as well as legal specialists," he wrote, reflected "the sense that our fundamental assumptions about the Supreme Court must change... The Court made clear that it was no longer prepared...to set the limits on state power."

We tried warning President Obama that his health-care law was unworkable. Now, after a glitch-filled week of implementation, Obamacare is under attack from the likes of not only Senator Ted Cruz, but also CNN's Wolf Blitzer. Yes, even the face of CNN is offering Obama this friendly advice: "They had three years to get this ready. If they weren't fully ready, they should accept the advice that a lot of Republicans are giving them: delay it another year."

Participants in Vermont's Reach Up welfare-to-work program will see longer-term child care subsidies and an increase in the amount of income the program will disregard when calculating benefits.

Depending on income eligibility guidelines, it would increase the amount of time a Reach Up recipient exiting the program can get state child care subsidies from one year to two. It also increases the amount of monthly income the state will disregard in calculating benefits.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is hosting two hearings about Native Americans in the foster care system ahead of a planned summit next month.

The tribe is hosting a pre-summit hearing April 20 at the Grand River Casino in Mobridge, S.D., and another one on April 26 at Prairie Nights Casino in Fort Yates, N.D.
