According to security software firm Kapersky, the recent Apple Mac Flashback Trojan that made such a splash in the news recently can most likely trace its roots back to infected WordPress sites.

Alexander Gostev from the Kaspersky Lab Global Research and Analysis Team explains how compromised WordPress sites were used to infect Macs, "From September 2011 to February 2012, Flashfake was distributed using social engineering only: visitors to various websites were asked to download a fake Adobe Flash Player update. It meant the Trojan was being distributed as installation archives named 'FlashPlayer-11-macos.pkg,' 'AdobeFlashUpdate.pkg,' etc." According to Gostev, in March 2012 approximately 700,000 computers worldwide were infected with the Trojan.

A number of web security companies have recently reported a dramatic increase in attacks on WordPress sites. Approximately 30,000 sites have been infected at last count, with most being based in the U.S.

The goal of the attacks seems to be to distribute rogue antivirus software. According to web security company Websense, "The injection hijacks visitors to the compromised sites and redirects them to rogue AV sites that attempt to trick them into downloading and installing a Trojan onto their computer."

If you open up your WordPress site to user registrations, then sooner or later you are bound to run into registration spam.

Of course there are a number of captcha plugins out there. But spam tools are getting better and better at solving captchas. Because of that, there have been a proliferation of more "manual" captcha tools, those that do things such as requiring the user to identify an animal or drag an image into place. These can work well if they work well, but unfortunately some simply don't.

As the vast majority of you are no doubt aware, WordPress is an open source development platform. In practical terms, this means one thing - you can have a hand in maintaining the world's most popular content management system.

Sounds pretty cool, right? However, there is a flip side to this - WordPress lives and dies by the efforts of volunteers. The vast majority of WordPress users will never contribute towards ongoing development. Whilst that is fine - you are certainly under no obligation to do so - if you feel you can help, there is a welcome place for you. Which brings me to the WordPress Trac...

One of the Incsub team was very upset yesterday to discover that his WordPress site had been hacked. Somehow, a brand new WordPress install had been set up within his WordPress installation.

Shiny Shiny Louis Vuitton bags! Who wouldn't want to be selling those on their websites? They're so damned popular that people are flocking to sell them. Personal blogs, delicious food websites, computer websites, book websites, tech websites, chat websites, shoe websites, just about everyone is getting on the bandwagon. Check it out on Google. Or wait.... yeah, I guess they've been hacked too:

I've been experimenting with the Chromium OS over the weekend. If you're not familiar, Chromium is the open source development version of Google's Chrome operating system, which ships on these new-fangled Chromebooks.

After several abortive attempts, I finally got Chromium Lime running on my Dell Mini 1018, and just about everything works fine. It's super fast, and for the first time I can use the pansy little netbook without feeling constrained by its low-power hardware. The most noteworthy point is that I barely even notice I'm running a different operating system. I use the Chrome browser on my primary Windows machine, and 99% of my computing time is spent on the web anyway - for both work and leisure.

We received an email today from a WordPress user who wanted to alert us to a jQuery hack. At first, I've got to admit, I was a little bit sceptical but I thought it was worth looking in to. I was surprised by what I found.

We all love jQuery - sometimes I like to daydream about marrying it in some sort of exotic ceremony in Barbados. In fact, it's so awesome that it's become a little bit ubiquitous. There are so many plugins using jQuery that we're totally used to finding it in them. Normally a WordPress plugin will get jQuery from just a few places...

Yesterday, our team was alerted to a potentially malicious social engineering scam targeting users of one of our plugins.

First, to be very clear, there is no problem or exploitable issue with any of our plugins. However, we felt the whole situation is important enough to share with as many members of the WordPress and development community as possible, as there's a good chance something similar might be used to target other users of premium plugins and themes. One of our members received the following email from a fraudulent email address that was made to appear like it came from me, Lead Developer at Incsub and WPMU DEV...

A few days ago this gem of a plugin landed in the inbox of one of our developers. Barry runs WP Plugins, one of our sister sites - a place for developers to sell their plugins.

"Facebook Fans Generator is a simple module through which your visitors will be automatically added to your fans on Facebook. Suppose your website is visited 1000 people per day of which 75% of visitors (according to statistics), has exactly in the same moment an open Facebook, you gain in one day 750 fans!" Wow! Nice! How about that? You can get all of your visitors to be your fans on Facebook! Sounds a big fishy, right?

Denis Sinegubko, a malware researcher and the developer of Unmask Parasites, a tool to help you find security vulnerabilities and hidden content on your website.

Denis took a few moments to do an interview with me about the new PHP and MySQL requirements for WordPress 3.2. Here's what he had to say...
