The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is being sued by six families who claim the agency can't impose new vaccine requirements for schoolchildren.

Beginning in the fall, seventh-graders and 12th graders must be vaccinated for tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis and meningitis. Those who aren't vaccinated cannot attend public schools. The lawsuit recently filed with the state Supreme Court claims the DHHR overstepped its authority. Delegate Patrick Lane represents the plaintiffs. The Kanawha County Republican say the DHHR can't require vaccines without the Legislature's approval.

It is ridiculous that a single test can determine if a child is promoted or retained.

If your school board has a retention policy, ask for a copy of the policy along with the minutes of the meeting when it was approved. Ask them about the research they used in formulating the grade retention policy.

"My child isn't making progress under the current IEP.

No! We don't expect a child to wear the same shoe for a full year. We know that children's needs change as they grow. The IEP is not cast in stone, but is a dynamic document that should be revised when necessary.

Jared Marcum's mother, Tanya Lardieri, was overcome with emotion after signing a dismissal order and cementing the fact that the criminal charges against her 14-year-old son, Jared Marcum, have been withdrawn.

"It should have come sooner but it's done and we don't have to have that concern anymore about him having a criminal record" Jared's father Allen Lardieri tells WOWK. "I'm just glad that it's over. His mother is glad it's over." Jared's attorney Ben White calls this a win for common sense. White says he's heard too many stories of children being penalized for seemingly harmless behavior, just because each of these incidents included gun imagery of one sort or another.

In 2000, New York legislators recognized the ubiquitous and unambiguous connection between violence, especially gun violence and mass murder, and the widespread prescribed use of psychiatric drugs.

Senate Bill 7035 was introduced in the New York State Senate that year requiring police agencies to report to the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) on certain crimes and suicides committed by a person who is using psychiatric drugs, including assault, homicide, sex offenses, robbery offenses, firearms and other dangerous weapons offenses, kidnapping and arson. The preamble to the bill read, in part: There is a large body of scientific research establishing a connection between violence and suicide and the use of psychotropic drugs in some cases. This research, which has been published in peer reviewed publications such as the American Journal of Psychiatry, The Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and The Journal of Forensic Science, has shown, among other things, that: certain drugs can induce mania (a psychosis which can produce bizarre, grandiose and highly elaborated destructive plans, including mass murder);. . .and certain drugs can produce an acute psychotic reaction in an individual not previously psychotic.
