The federal government has taken its first large-scale action against medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Federal agents raided several cannabis shops and issued warning letters to dozens of others on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported. "We couldn't do all of L.A. at once," said spokesman Thom Mrozek. "There's just too many stores." Prosecutors filed civil asset forfeiture complaints against the owners of three properties in northeastern Los Angeles for allowing commercial marijuana stores to operate on their premises.

A debate over renewable energy policies in the United States turned bitter after a lawmaker accused colleagues of embracing coal and nuclear power.

The House of Representatives passed a measure to get rid of a loan guarantee program at the U.S. Department of Energy for renewable energy projects. Dubbed the No More Solyndras Act, the measure would bar consideration of loan guarantees filed after 2011. U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, said his Republican counterparts were favoring energy resources like coal instead of renewables.

Cybersecurity experts say the U.S. Congress and the courts need to clarify what private firms can and cannot do to protect themselves from computer hackers.

The new approach would focus on reducing vulnerable areas in a company's digital security rather than actively deterring attackers, The Washington Post reported Monday. The private sector needs to know who's targeting their computer networks and the ability to aggressively defend themselves, said Steven Chabinsky, who stepped down this month as the FBI's top cyber lawyer. To do that, he said, businesses need a better relationship with law enforcement and the courts.

A lobbying group in Washington says the U.S. recession and the financial meltdown that followed cost the country $12.8 trillion.

"People actually shouldn't be surprised there is a big number when you're adding up the costs of what's happened to this country," said Dennis Kelleher, chief executive officer of Better Markets, which advocates for tougher finance regulations and came up with the price for the economic collapse. “Wall Street and its many allies and sympathizers are denying and understating the cost of the crisis to kill, weaken and avoid regulation,” Kelleher said.

A filibuster to gain support for the release of the doctor who helped locate Osama bin Laden held up a vote on the Veterans Job Corps bill in the U.S. Senate.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said his filibuster Wednesday was to draw attention to his call for Pakistani leaders to release Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA find bin Laden, Politico reported Thursday. Paul had said he would stall Senate action until the doctor is released from jail in Pakistan, something the government has said it would not do. Paul also called on the Obama administration to block aid to Pakistan until Afridi is released.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he liked parts of President Barack Obama's U.S. healthcare overhaul and would retain them as president.

"I'm not getting rid of all of healthcare reform," Romney told NBC's "Meet the Press," breaking from a campaign pledge suggesting he would rescind Obama's entire healthcare plan on Day 1 of his presidency. "Of course there are a number of things that I like in healthcare reform that I'm going to put in place. One is to make sure that those with pre-existing conditions can get coverage. Two is to assure that the marketplace allows for individuals to have policies that cover their family up to whatever age they might like. I also want individuals to be able to buy health insurance on their own, as opposed to only being able to get it on a tax advantage basis through their company."

A federal judge has found Ohio's restriction on early in-person voting is "arbitrary and disparate treatment" and ordered the state to restore early voting.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Peter C. Economus came Friday in a lawsuit brought by President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and Ohio Democrats. Ohio Secretary of State John Husted has ordered all 88 Ohio county elections boards to do away with early voting on weekends - which Ohio Democrats say has mostly been favored by voters in urban areas of the state. Husted's order followed a vote by Republican lawmakers in Ohio to end in-person early voting on the three days prior to Election Day.
