The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said the number of people looking to purchase firearms has increased by 43 percent during the weekend.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation reported approval of 2,887 background checks of people who want to buy guns from Friday to Sunday, a 43 percent increase from the Friday to Sunday period the week before, The Denver Post reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has put a cork in print media and Internet alcohol advertising in Russia, the Kremlin said.

Putin signed a ban on advertising alcohol drinks that is to take effect on Jan. 1, 2013, for print media, as many of those companies have annual advertising contracts with alcohol producers, RIA Novosti reported Saturday.

U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday Congress "must pass" the Cybersecurity Act of 2012 to address cyberthreats to the country's infrastructure.

In an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, the president said "critical infrastructure networks" have not been disrupted or damaged, but "foreign governments, criminal syndicates and lone individuals are probing our financial, energy and public safety systems every day." "Last year, a water plant in Texas disconnected its control system from the Internet after a hacker posted pictures of the facility's internal controls," he said. "More recently, hackers penetrated the networks of companies that operate our natural-gas pipelines. Computer systems in critical sectors of our economy - including the nuclear and chemical industries - are being increasingly targeted."

U.S. President Barack Obama Thursday told a Jacksonville, Fla., audience Mitt Romney's plans to roll back healthcare reform will cost them big time.

In the first day of a two-day campaign swing, Obama talked up differences between himself and his presumptive Republican challenger, especially in the healthcare arena. "He plans to roll back healthcare reform, forcing more than 200,000 Floridians to pay more for their prescription drugs," Obama said. "He plans to turn Medicare into a voucher program.

A California transportation agency said it is considering a tax on motorists for each mile they drive in their cars.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the San Francisco Bay area agency leading the discussions on the possible tax, said the plan would likely involve GPS-like devices installed in cars to keep track of the miles traveled by motorists, with low-income drivers excepted, the San Jose Mercury News reported Wednesday.

Charges were unsealed in New York Tuesday against 48 suspects accused of diverting hundreds of millions of dollars in Medicaid prescription drugs.

The U.S. Justice Department said the fraud cost Medicaid more than an estimated $500 million in reimbursements for pills diverted into the second-hand black market. Thirty-four suspects were arrested Tuesday morning. Fifteen defendants were taken into custody in New York and New Jersey, and one defendant from the area was expected to surrender. The 16 defendants were scheduled to appeal before a U.S. magistrate in New York.

A law forbidding fortunetellers to work in the central Louisiana city of Alexandria is unconstitutional, a federal judge has ruled.

U.S. District Judge Dee Drell agreed with a June recommendation by U.S. Magistrate James D. Kirk, The (Alexandria) Town Talk reported. Drell said the law banning fortunetellers is a violation of First Amendment rights to free speech. He pointed out fortunetelling is practiced in New Orleans.

Republican leaders in the United States announced they introduced a bill that proposes more transparency in loans for renewable energy programs.

Reps. Fred Upton, R-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., chairman of an investigative subcommittee, introduced draft legislation that would phase out a loan guarantee program enacted in 2005. The bill, dubbed the "No More Solyndras Act," aims to force the Department of Energy to report to lawmakers on the details of any loan guarantee.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed anti-cyberbullying legislation that puts more responsibility on schools to monitor and report incidents.

The law, which Cuomo signed Monday but doesn't go into effect for another year, defines the crime as harassment, on or off school grounds, taking place through any electronic means, and that "reasonably causes or would reasonably be expected to cause physical injury or emotional harm to a student." the measure creates a system for reports of cyberbullying to reach school administrators and calls for teacher training to better identify the crime, the Buffalo News reported.

Former Commerce Secretary John Bryson may have received preferential treatment after an alleged car accident in California June 9, the other driver said.

Rich Sanchez, 26, of La Verne, Calif., told KTLA-TV Bryson seemed confused, glassy-eyed and unaware after he allegedly rear-ended Sanchez' car while it was waiting for a train to pass in the San Gabriel Valley near Los Angeles. After the accident, Sanchez, said, both drivers agreed to wait for the train to pass before pulling over to exchange information, but instead of pulling over, Bryson rammed Sanchez' car again and sped away.
