"After serving on the TUD board for eleven years I have reluctantly reached the decision that it is fruitless for me to continue at this time." -- Ralph Retherford M.D.

"The reason? Fundamental differences of opinion between myself and the other four board members regarding what and how much needs to be done about spending practices at TUD. This has come to the forefront now as a result of the public outcry that occurred a few months ago when TUD proposed a huge rate increase. When faced with a community up in arms and a board room full of angry rate payers, that plan was withdrawn by general manager Pete Kampa. I was the lone board member who voted against that rate proposal. Since that time, myself and others in our community have taken a close look at the spending side of TUD's budget deficit. If you recall, it was a $2 million shortfall that was given as the reason for the 50% rate increase..."

After a decade of failure, why assume that the bans will reduce violent crime THIS time around?

It's not easy being a leftist who loves guns. It's like being a Republican who listens to NPR or supports single payer health care. But being a leftist, I get exposed to all the liberal publications and media that invariably call for gun control every time someone does something stupid with one. Being a gun enthusiast, I also get exposed to the political Right's oversimplification of those liberals as somehow lacking moral fiber or true appreciation of freedom. Rather than agreeing with both, I tend to end up arguing with both. It's exhausting to always feel like I'm apologizing for the other "side". This article takes a point of view, but aims to do so in a way that members of both sides of the political spectrum can understand. I'll try to give some idea as to why we on the political left roll our eyes at the rhetoric of the NRA, and how we in the "gun culture" can possibly defend something called "assault weapons".

I tell you, I've had it up to here with the line from the other side about tax revenues and a "balanced approach."

No I'm not blind to the fact that we are in a recession, and thus our income tax system collects less now (the tax system is a topic for another thread I'm planning) than in times of plenty. But what bugs the hell out of me is that the left insists that we need a balanced approach to cutting the deficit. That is, in their minds, both cutting spending and increasing taxes. Here's some advice, though, straight from me to you: We didn't get into this mess by not taxing enough.

Without some check on federal power, we end up with a government without limits.

In a May 2 column [Alabama State Senate Embraces Crackpot, Antebellum Legal Theory], Robert Schlesinger relegated the idea of nullification to the historical trash heap. But if James Madison and Thomas Jefferson strolled down the streets of D.C. today, listening to current political discourse, they'd likely declare conventional wisdom holding the federal government supreme in all it does a "crackpot post-antebellum legal theory." Even Alexander Hamilton would undoubtedly express shock. After all, he was one of the first Constitution defenders to point out the limits of federal supremacy in Federalist 33.

California's oil and gas industry is estimated (with official data due to be released in coming days) to use more than 2 million gallons of fresh water per day;

Californians are outraged after discovering that these firms are excluded from Governor Jerry Brown's mandatory water restrictions, "forcing ordinary Californians to shoulder the burden of the drought."

While not news to Zero Hedge readers who knew about the final debt settlement of US debt about 10 days ahead of schedule, it is now official.

According to the US Treasury, America has closed the books on 2011 with debt at an all time record $15,222,940,045,451.09. And, as was observed here first in all of the press, US debt to GDP is now officially over 100%, or 100.3% to be specific, a fact which the US government decided to delay exposing until the very end of the calendar year. We wonder, rhetorically, just how prominent of a talking point this historic event will be in any upcoming GOP primary debates.

It's called Operation Kill Switch, and it was actually constructed under President George W. Bush, but President Barack Hussein Obama's administration is being called to the mat to explain it.

Probably because Hussein Obama has an itchy Kill Switch finger, and is ready to push the button. Basically, Operation Kill Switch mandated that the U.S. Government make ready a plan that will cut off all internet and cell phone communications in one fell swoop. And the U.S. Government has created just such an ability. In November, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the Department of Homeland Security must make its plan to shut off the internet and cellphone communications available to the American public. The government has until December 12 to do so, or the Department of Homeland Security can file for an extension of the date to reveal just how Kill Switch works. Knowing the U.S. Government and how much they really care about the people they are supposed to represent (yes, that was a joke) expect an extension.

For now, the Chick-fil-A debate has been established as just another front on the culture war, with opponents and supporters of same-sex marriage filing into their respective camps.

In recent years, American liberals have developed an undying affection for a quote from the late comedian George Carlin expressing their deathless paranoia that the nation is always one Republican administration away from totalitarianism. "When fascism comes to America," Carlin said on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," "it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts. Smiley-smiley." Given Carlin's political disposition, it hardly bears mentioning that this remark came moments after a rant accusing George W. Bush of being the progenitor of said fascism.

FISA Amendments Act and warrant-less spying are moving through the House and Senate, and would allow NSA to continue spying on the American citizen.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to renew the dangerous FISA Amendment Act-which hands the NSA broad, warrantless surveillance powers over Americans' international communications-for another five years. Sadly, the House refused to add any new oversight powers or privacy protections, despite ample evidence the NSA has used it to unconstitutionally spy on Americans. In fact, Rep. Lamar Smith, the bill's co-sponsor, would not even allow any amendments to come up for a vote.
