For years, few questioned how doctors treated the emotional trauma of California's abused and neglected children - and nobody monitored how often they handed out psychiatric drugs that can turn fragile childhoods into battles with obesity...

Now, a Bay Area News Group investigation into the prescribing habits of the state's foster care doctors reveals for the first time how a fraction of those physicians has been fueling the medicating of California's most vulnerable kids. A mere 10 percent of the state's highest prescribers were responsible about 50 percent of the time when a foster child received an antipsychotic, the riskiest class of what are known as psychotropic drugs - with some of the most harmful side effects.

What I am about to tell you is something you've probably never heard or read in history books," she likes to tell audiences. I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history. We voted him in.

If you remember the plot of the Sound of Music, the Von Trapp family escaped over the Alps rather than submit to the Nazis. Kitty wasn't so lucky. Her family chose to stay in her native Austria. She was 10 years old, but bright and aware. And she was watching.

One question is top of mind, even to those Americans who have lost their minds when it comes to kindness, compassion, respect for fallen soldiers and other qualities we value as a democracy: Who is fit to be president of the United States?

However, my question is: Who is fit, period? After watching both Republican and Democratic conventions -- up close to the TV, and very personal -- I began digging into what's been reported about Clinton's and Trump's wellness routines. After all, president of the United States is a huge job. Strong mental focus and physical well-being are required, and both are undeniably linked to the amount of exercise you get, the quality of the food you eat, how much you sleep and how you deal with incalculable amounts of stress.

The dramatic power and magnificent acting of the movie "Lincoln" have generated a great deal of commentary, criticism and articles about that period of our history.

There was no Republican Party in the United States until 1854. At that time the two dominant parties were the Democrats and the Whigs. The third Republican Party didn't come from out of the sky. Its origins go back to the anti-slavery Liberty Party formed in 1840, succeeded by the Free Soil Party in 1848 and then by the Republicans six years later. What all had in common was their opposition to the spread of slavery as the nation grew.

As companies shun genetically modified ingredients, they're buying more sugar extracted from sugar cane rather than beets. Sugar beet farmers are thinking of going back to conventional beets.

It's all because about eight years ago, nearly all the farmers who grow sugar beets in the United States decided to start growing genetically modified versions of their crop. The GMO beets, which can tolerate the weedkiller glyphosate, otherwise known as Roundup, made it easier for them to get rid of weeds. They really didn't expect any problems. Just in the past two years, though, that's changed. Many food companies have decided to label their products as non-GMO.

Under the cover of darkness, just hours after Hillary Clinton was handed a get-out-of-jail-free card by the FBI for committing felony crimes, the Senate quietly voted 63-30 to preempt state law in direct violation of the Tenth Amendment.

Senator Jeff Merkley wasn't afraid to call a spade a spade in the aftermath of the treasonous vote, which was further buried in the news cycle by Obama's latest attempt at race-baiting in order to abolish the Second Amendment. Merkley told the media that the so-called Roberts-Stabenow Bill, also known as the Monsanto DARK Act 2.0, is a farce, and will do nothing to protect consumers who want to know what they're eating.

A worker at a federal laboratory in Colorado intentionally manipulated test results for years, possibly tainting research that includes toxic metals in the Everglades, uranium near the Grand Canyon and coal in Afghanistan, investigators say.

The falsified data from a U.S. Geological Survey lab may have affected 24 coal, water and environmental research projects costing a total of $108 million, according to a report released recently by the Interior Department's inspector general. USGS spokeswoman Anne-Berry Wade said Thursday the agency isn't sure why the employee falsified the results of chemical analyses but said it wasn't for personal gain or "any nefarious reason."

Gov. Jerry Brown signed six stringent gun-control measures Friday that will require people to turn in high-capacity magazines and mandate background checks for ammunition sales, as California Democrats seek to strengthen gun laws.

Brown vetoed five other bills, including requirement to register homemade firearms and report lost or stolen weapons to authorities. The Democratic governor's action is consistent with his mixed record on gun control . Some of the enacted bills duplicate provisions of a November ballot measure by Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. Some of the vetoed measures also appear in Newsom's initiative.

The Supreme Court ruling in Utah v Strieff awarded the police total freedom to stop any citizen, at any time, to do whatever they desire.

The Supreme Court determined that the "poisonous fruit" of a police officer's stop of a citizen can be used against them at trial. This has wiped out, in reality, any constitutional protection you thought you had. This is a sad day for the United States, for the Supreme Court has officially created a full-blown police state and clearly has no intention of honoring why this nation began the entire American Revolution - to prevent illegal searches that allowed the king to look for anything he could use to prosecute citizens.

On Wednesday, in the dead of night, as House Democrats held a sit-in for gun safety, House Republicans stripped language that would make it easier for qualified veterans to access state-legal medical marijuana.

With no transparency and little opportunity for Members to review, the House passed the legislation shortly after 3 a.m. local time Thursday. The Senate will vote on the legislation next. Currently, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) specifically prohibits its medical providers from completing forms allowing a qualified veteran to participate in a state medical marijuana program.
