I was in Amsterdam when the Snowden story broke. CNN was non-stop asking politicians and pundits, "Is Edward Snowden a traitor?" Those who said he betrayed America also said something else: Mass surveillance is only an issue if you're a criminal.

The Snowden story hit me upon my return from - of all places on earth - the Secret Annex of the Anne Frank House. The Secret Annex is where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for two years. It was during this period of hiding in terror that Anne wrote her world-famous diary. In it she confided, "I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I've never met."

Congress is poised to force Facebook and other social media networks to inform on users they believe might be engaged in "online terrorist activity."

Last week Dianne Feinstein, the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee along with the committee's chairman Richard Burr, introduced the "Requiring Reporting of Online Terrorist Activity Act". The proposed law is modeled after an existing law requiring companies to report child pornography.

This week my TV show is on gun control. I interviewed activist Leah Barrett, who wants stricter gun laws. I pointed out that after most states loosened gun laws to let people carry guns, 29 peer-reviewed studies examined the effect.

Eighteen found less crime, 10 found no difference and only one found an increase. "Which studies?" Barrett snapped. "John Lott's? His research has been totally discredited." "Discredited" is a word the anti-gun activists use a lot. It's as if they speak from the same playbook. "Lott is a widely discredited ideologue," said a spokeswoman for Everytown-a Bloomberg-funded gun control group.

The Immigration and Nationality Act passed June 27, 1952 revised the laws relating to immigration, naturalization, and nationality for the United States.

That act, which became Public Law 414, established both the law and the intent of Congress regarding the immigration of Aliens to the US and remains in effect today. Among the many issues it covers, one in particular, found in Chapter 2 Section 212, is the prohibition of entry to the US if the Alien belongs to an organization seeking to overthrow the government of the United States by "force, violence, or other unconstitutional means."

Slashing property taxes for homeowners with large numbers of dead trees is one option to help address the worst epidemic of tree mortality in recent memory, according to a former county supervisor.

Mark Thornton, of Groveland, urged the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors at Tuesday's meeting to consider reducing or waiving property taxes for those in the area affected by the statewide tree mortality emergency. He represented District 4 from 1997 through 2008.
