REDLANDS With an election right around the corner, public opinion is taking its usual place upstage from the scenic vistas and century-old Victorian estates that line Redlands streets.

The lawn signs and few large billboards that dot residential streets, businesses and vacant lots proclaim picks for three City Council seats and three voter initiatives that will be up for grabs in November. The thefts of dozens of these signs have disappointed several of the nine hopefuls, who are struggling to protect the investments of citizens and businesses who contributed to their campaigns.

Study Ranks America's Most Liberal and Conservative Cities

A new nationwide study released by the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research (BACVR) ranks the political leanings of every American city and finds that Detroit, Michigan is the most liberal and Provo, Utah the most conservative.

In all, the BACVR researchers examined voting patterns of 237 American cities with populations of over 100,000 and ranked them each on liberal and conservative scales. The list of Americas most liberal cities is dominated by cities with large African American populations that are concentrated in the Northeast, Midwest and California. Conversely, the study found that the staunchest conservative cities are clustered in the South and interior West and have extremely low numbers of African American residents.

The decision, with an opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia and dissents from Justices John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, overturned a ruling by a federal appeals court in Colorado. The appeals court had permitted a lawsuit to proceed against a Colorado town, Castle Rock, for the failure of the police to respond to a woman's pleas for help after her estranged husband violated a protective order by kidnapping their three young daughters, whom he eventually killed.

On May 26, my article, "Whining Parents," was published. The article reproduced statements on a website regarding parents' disgust with the "one test and you pass" policy of the Gwinnett County, GA middle schools.

By 6:22 a.m., I had a letter in my email box from a defender of these parents. This, you understand, comes from a woman who reads LRC early in the morning. This is not from some run-of-the-mill defender of the public schools. The letter begins with the right of parents to complain.

As the Federal Election Commission takes its first steps to shape campaign rules for the blog era, FEC Commissioner Bradley Smith warned that proposed rules present unanswered questions for bloggers:

The draft rules provide some protections for "individual" political commentators. But what if a group of people jointly publish a blog' "If one of the bloggers received payment for an activity, would it turn the group into a political committee" subject to campaign finance regulation, Smith asked. He pointed to the academic-leaning Volokh Conspiracy blog, which has multiple contributors.

Democracy Is Not Freedom

We've all heard the words democracy and freedom used countless times, especially in the context of our invasion of Iraq. They are used interchangeably in modern political discourse, yet their true meanings are very different.

George Orwell wrote about "meaningless words" that are endlessly repeated in the political arena.* Words like "freedom," "democracy," and "justice," Orwell explained, have been abused so long that their original meanings have been eviscerated. In Orwell's view, political words were "Often used in a consciously dishonest way." Without precise meanings behind words, politicians and elites can obscure reality and condition people to reflexively associate certain words with positive or negative perceptions. In other words, unpleasant facts can be hidden behind purposely meaningless language. As a result, Americans have been conditioned to accept the word "democracy" as a synonym for freedom, and thus to believe that democracy is unquestionably good. The problem is that democracy is not freedom. Democracy is simply majoritarianism, which is inherently incompatible with real freedom. Our founding fathers clearly understood this, as evidenced not only by our republican constitutional system, but also by their writings in the Federalist Papers and elsewhere. James Madison cautioned that under a democratic government, "There is nothing to check the inducement to sacrifice the weaker party or the obnoxious individual." John Adams argued that democracies merely grant revocable rights to citizens depending on the whims of the masses, while a republic exists to secure and protect pre-existing rights. Yet how many Americans know that the word "democracy" is found neither in the Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence, our very founding documents?

September 1 - CEOs at companies that outsource the most US jobs are rewarded with bigger paychecks, according to a new report, "Executive Excess 2004: Campaign Contributions, Outsourcing, Unexpensed Stock Options and Rising CEO Pay."

CEOs of the 70 companies that sponsored this summer's Democratic and Republican National Conventions saw their pay jump 49 percent in 2003, far outpacing the 9 percent raise for the average large company CEO. Similarly, the 38 CEOs who have personally raised at least $100,000 for either the Bush or Kerry presidential campaigns earned an average of $15.1 million in 2003, 86 percent more than the average large company CEO.

As Election Day 2004 approaches, there has been the inevitable talk in the media about possible fraud: illegals voting, felons voting, dead people voting, minorities not voting, etc.

One side denying some the right to vote and the other side letting some vote as often as they like. While that type of fraud is despicable and must be prevented, the election fraud that I'm talking about would be the election of John Kerry. If it should happen, it would constitute the greatest fraud ever foisted on the American public.

Recently, I was surprised to see a long-term Libertarian's car sporting a Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker. "What's with the Kerry bumper sticker'" I asked my friend. "Isn't it self-explanatory'" he replied sarcastically.

"Okay, okay, I see that you're going to vote for Kerry. I just want to know why. I thought you would be voting Libertarian." He then proceeded to tell me that while he doesn't like Kerry, he simply despises George W. Bush. "You don't want to waste your vote on somebody that you fundamentally disagree with, do you'" I asked him. "I've been wasting my vote for years by voting Libertarian," he replied bitterly.
