For 7 million Canadian children, this is the season of new: new backpacks, new clothes, new notebooks, new pencils, new teachers, new classrooms, new experiences and if you live in Ontario, new sexually graphic curriculum.

Except for that last bit, all the new and exciting things that seem to be taking place for everyone else can make a homeschooling Mom feel a wee bit left out, maybe even a bit guilty or jealous - especially if her morning has gotten off to a rough start.

Facebook, the popular social network with over a billion users world wide, has just been hit with a class-action lawsuit.

The allegations, revealed in the FT, are that Facebook systematically scans the content of private messages so it can sell the data to third parties such as advertisers. Facebook's entire business model is based on the fact that it monitors what users write, like and up-load in order to sell this information on to others. I have covered some of the concerns about this in my articles 'How Facebook Exploits Your Private Information' and 'How Facebook Likes Reveal Your Intimate Secrets'. In principle, there is nothing wrong with Facebook using our data to make commercial gains. In the end, the service is free and Facebook has to make money somehow. However, my biggest concern is that the data mining activities are not as transparent as they should be.

Nearly 1,000 dogs reportedly have been sickened by chicken jerky pet treats from China, according to a new tally of complaints from worried owners and veterinarians submitted to federal health officials.

The Food and Drug Administration has logged some 900 reports of illnesses and deaths since November, when it warned owners about continued problems with the products known variously as chicken jerky strips, treats and nuggets, a spokeswoman said. Back then, the agency already had heard from 70 owners about problems ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to kidney failure and other serious ailments after animals reportedly consumed the treats. Since then, complaints have mounted steadily, putting growing pressure on the FDA to solve the problem.

An Ohio third-grader weighing more than 200 pounds has been taken from his family and placed into foster care when county social workers said his mother wasn't doing enough to control his weight.

The Plain Dealer reports that the 8-year-old is considered severely obese and at risk for diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. The Ohio Health Department estimates more than 12 percent of third-graders statewide are severely obese. The removal of the Cleveland child is the first state officials can recall of a child being put in foster care for a strictly weight-related issue.

My name is Robert, and I am a Cornell University undergraduate student. However, I'm not sure if I want to be one any more. Allow me to explain.

Cornell, as an institution, appears to be complicit in a shocking amount of ecologically destructive, academically unethical, and scientifically deceitful behavior. Perhaps the most potent example is Cornell's deep ties to industrial GMO agriculture, and the affiliated corporations such as Monsanto. I'd like to share how I became aware of this troubling state of affairs.

Sarah Palin once warned of death panels resulted from socialized medicine. She was mocked for the label, but the United Kingdom's NHS hospitals are seemingly striving to prove that Palin was correct.

The Liverpool Care Pathway has become notorious for its supposed end-of-life treatment. Over time, it has come to light that the so-called end-of-life "care" really consists of slowly starving and dehydrating patients to death, even children, who are put on the pathway not for being terminally ill, but simply for being disabled. Now, more shocking news has come to the surface. It turns out that half of all patients placed on the pathway are not informed.

I was all set to post something snarky about this story from Santa Clara, California, where a college went into lockdown because someone mistook a cardboard cutout of a gun for a real weapon.

But hey, at least that incident involved a bona fide suspicion, mistaken though it was, that a ski-masked gunman was on the prowl. No such excuse is available for school officials in Suffolk, Virginia, who just did this: "A Suffolk second grader has been suspended for making gunlike noises while pointing a pencil at another student."

I'm as surprised as you are. Who could have guessed that someone who "joked" about working for OFA might not like grassroots righties?

There's an important lesson to be learned here, my friends. When you're arranging for your hard drive to be "scratched," make sure it's scratched deeply enough that stuff like this can't be recovered. No wonder she wanted to take a closer look at tea-party nonprofits. They're run by terrorists 'n stuff.

No decision has been made yet about whether the defendants must be held awaiting sentencing; lawyers have until Tuesday to submit more material for the judge to consider, and Michael, Megan, and Greg are being held until then.

After about an hour of combing through case law, conditions and sub-conditions this morning to determine whether or not the three should be held until sentencing, Judge Thapar asked the prosecution in frustration, "Don't you find it a little troubling that Congress would write a law that wouldn't let me distinguish between peace activists and terrorists?" When Megan, Greg, and Michael arrived in the courtroom they were wearing tan prison jumpsuits marked "FEDERAL INMATE," with their hands shackled to their waists.

The United States is now firmly entering the eighth stage of all civilizations ~ Dependence with only Bondage ahead of it.

Apathy has allowed our constitution to be shredded in stage seven which led to our current state of Dependence on the state ~ but soon an IRS monitored Obamacare program of 'Shared responsibility, or else' will usher in the Orwellian ninth stage of militarized Bondage.
