Electronic tax returns free and easier, IRS says

Changes to the program are likely to result in a big increase in taxpayers who file their returns electronically.

More than 4 million taxpayers will take advantage of the Internal Revenue Service's free electronic tax-filing program next year, up more than 43 percent from this year's filing season, a top federal tax official estimated yesterday.

With the holidays approaching, one family is hoping they have enough money to continue to pay medical bills, let alone gifts.

Twelve-year-old Lee Jennings of Pittsgrove Township was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in late 2002. Because the disease was already progressed, Jennings was immediately placed into intensive chemotherapy.<br><br>Jennings had to be removed from Pittsgrove Middle School and is currently receiving home-schooling. Due to his weakened immune system, Jennings cannot be exposed to other sick children as even those with a common cold could affect Jennings health.

As a cost cutting measure the State of Michigan has declared that temporary workers will not be hired this January, as usual, to process tax returns.

This year due to Michigan's looming deficit, Governor Granholm has informed tax consulting firms around the state that for the first time, since its inception all tax returns must be filed electronically.

Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB locations in Southern California will donate $300,000 to area American Red Cross chapters this week.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., operates more than 138 discount stores, 32 SAM'S CLUBS and five distribution centers -- employing more than 56,700 associates -- in California. Last year, area Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB locations donated more than $9.4 million to support California communities and local non-profit organizations. Since 2000, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., has donated more than $4 million to aid communities through the Salvation Army, American Red Cross and other relief organizations during times of disaster.

At 2:00 a.m. Daylight Savings Time ended for another year as most Americans turned their clocks back before they went to bed last night.

A few, of course, forgot and went to church this morning an hour early. None of them will likely arrive at work tomorrow an hour early. Even the dumbest of us aren't really that stupid. And because, as a nation, we've been living with Daylight Savings Time for sixty years, few Americans wonder how the practice began.

Illegal drug use and cigarette smoking among sixth- through 12th-graders increased slightly during the past school year.

Twenty-four percent of these teenagers reported using marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens or other illegal drugs at least once in the 2002-2003 school year, compared with 22 percent the year before, according to the private study by Pride Surveys released Wednesday.

On the surface, this week's ruling by the Ninth Circuit court of appeals - overturning the death sentences of more than 100 inmates in Arizona, Montana, and Idaho - is the latest sign of statistical retreat for capital punishment in America.

Reflect Americans' ambivalence about a penalty that most still believe in but are more hesitant to inflict. On the one hand, legislatures are enacting tough-on-crime laws. Attorney General John Ashcroft has been an active proponent of tough sentencing. And 74 percent of Americans favor the death penalty for a person convicted of murder, according to the latest Gallup Poll in May. (The number drops to 53 percent when life without parole is an alternative.)

In previous years, and on the first day of class, I have given my new students a ballot, indicating that "it is time to elect the leader of a great nation," and offering them two candidates, A and B.

Candidate A is identified as "a well-known critic of government, this man has been involved in tax protest movements, and has openly advocated secession, armed rebellion against the existing national government, and even the overthrow of that government. He is a known member of a militia group that was involved in a shoot-out with law enforcement authorities. He opposes gun control efforts of the present national government, as well as restrictions on open immigration into this country. He is a businessman who has earned his fortune from such businesses as alcohol, tobacco, retailing, and smuggling."
