What would you do if you received a threatening letter from your child's school, demanding that you take your youngster to a medical doctor and dentist at the whims of the school administrators, or risk being reported to the child welfare authorities?

Parents in at least two states have gotten exactly such letters. Police State USA reports: Under the auspices of keeping children healthy, the government has usurped the role of "parent" away from actual parents. The state - not legal guardians - is determining when and how children should be subjected to outside business influences. The provisions establish that the state has taken the final say in parenting matters, undermining parents' natural role in the child's life as protector and final decision maker. The provision invades the privacy of the family by giving the government access to private medical results.

As many PowerBlog readers will be aware, homeschooling is an educational choice that increasing numbers of parents are making.

Once a fringe activity operating under the radar of the law, over the course of the last 30 years it has practically gone mainstream. No one has precise numbers (the government can't track them!), but everyone agrees that the number of homeschooled children in the US has long passed the one million mark.

Last month, Catholics in the Detroit area were shocked by the news that 8 of the region's Catholic high schools were slated to close.

The announcement adds to a growing trend: 136 Catholic schools across the country were shuttered in 2004. In part, these closings are simply reflective of the ebb and flow of demographics. Meanwhile, new suburban schools are being built, and many have waiting lists.

HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala today approved a welfare demonstration in the state of California which is designed to promote self-sufficiency for recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children.

Teen-age AFDC parents who maintain at least a "C" grade point average or graduate from high school will be eligible to receive cash bonuses of $100 and $500, respectively. Parents who fail to maintain a "D" grade point average could have their AFDC payment reduced by $50 for each of two months.

A study coming out this week in The Journal of Human Resources gives an important answer. Teachers of classes as early as kindergarten factor good behavior into grades - and girls, as a rule, comport themselves far better than boys.

The study's authors analyzed data from more than 5,800 students from kindergarten through fifth grade and found that boys across all racial groups and in all major subject areas received lower grades than their test scores would have predicted. That boys struggle with school is hardly news. A few decades ago, when we realized that girls languished behind boys in math and science, we mounted a concerted effort to give them more support, with significant success. Shouldn't we do the same for boys? When I made this argument in my book "The War Against Boys," almost no one was talking about boys' academic, social and vocational problems.

A pro-family activist says sexual indoctrination of all California public school students will be the norm if a controversial education bill is signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

By a virtual party-line vote (22-15), the California Senate passed a bill earlier this month that would require public school history textbooks to include discussion of homosexual and transgender people's contributions to society. S.B. 1437, sponsored by lesbian Sheila Kuehl, is now in the State Assembly, which is also led by Democrats.

An Arkansas mother who succeeded in getting three sexually explicit books removed from Fayetteville school libraries says she has found there are more than a hundred books of that nature in the school district.

Now a mental health counselor is recommending a parental audit of all the books in the city's school libraries. According to a search conducted by Fayetteville mom Laurie Taylor, out of 502 books listed under "sex" in the city's middle, junior high, and high school libraries, there are 66 books on sex instruction, and 32 of those are on child sex instruction. Another 75 of the books deal with homosexuality, 23 fall under the category of lesbian fiction, 16 are on rape, 9 on incest, and there are even some books on bestiality.

The founder and chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association is urging Christian families to embrace the idea that God gives children to parents -- not to government schools.

Farris, a long-time advocate of home schooling, believes the public education in America is largely responsible for the moral relativism to prevalent among today's young people.

Experts Try to Dispel Common Home Schooling Myths

Dr. Tim LaHaye, says evangelical pastors who advocate sending their Christian youth to public schools are "philosophically out to lunch." He says those pastors and other Christian leaders who look favorably on public education "don't understand the worldview of the secular humanists that's being taught" in U.S. public schools.
