Free energy breakthrough? Holy grail of water splitting technology now achieved with sunlight, mirrors and seawater

A team of scientists at the University of Colorado, Boulder, have achieved what appears to be the "holy grail" of water splitting technology for the production and storage of clean, abundant energy. Because sunlight is free, I'm calling this "free energy.

To understand this breakthrough, it's important to first understand why solar power has so many limitations. Solar is great when the sun is shining, but storing solar power require the deployment of a large array of heavy, expensive and toxic electrical storage devices known as "deep cycle batteries." To put it in street terms, deep cycle battery technology sucks. The batteries suck, the chemicals suck, the weight sucks and the cost sucks. There is absolutely nothing to like about batteries unless you enjoy hulking around with heavy, useless objects.

This topic deserves the deepest introspection by every person of every age and gender. At the core of our being, we are first and foremost male or female.

Now, what's interesting to consider about this exploding fascination with gender is that all grant-based projects come with governmental agendas attached - all grant-based projects. And in today's world, grant-based projects partner with other grant-based projects - all sharing information, and all reporting their project results and data to their grantors - the government.

No, they didn't find it in space. They discovered it somewhere even stranger and more exotic, the place from which all bizarre life forms originate: California.

If, per NASA's breathless announcement a few days ago, you were expecting something even freaky deakier, try not to be too disappointed. This is still darned deaky. In a nutshell: Every last organism on Earth is supposed to contain six essential elements - carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, sulphur, and phosphorus, the last of which is essential for forming the framework of the DNA double-helix. From bacteria to blue whales, if something's alive then it's got the big six. No exceptions to that rule. Until now.

What's tuition up to these days at private universities, parents? About $30-35,000? Nearly half of the nation's undergraduates show almost no gains in learning in their first two years of college.

Despite learning a little bit of jack and a whole lot of squat, students in the survey nonetheless managed a 3.2 GPA on average according to the study's author, which tells you most of what you need to know about grade inflation and the rigors of modern higher learning.

Bill Weihl, head of Google Energy, revealed on Friday at the Earth2Tech Green.Net event that the subsidiary might help the search engine giant access renewable energy to power its massive data centers, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.

Google formed the new subsidiary to purchase and sell power on the wholesale market. Weihl tried to put an end to the recent speculation surrounding the subsidiary, joking that Google was not looking to be the next Enron as an energy trading power broker. He did, however, offer a situation where Google Energy could help supply the company with renewable energy for its data centers. "Supposing we had a facility somewhere in the Midwest and have power contracts," Weihl said, adding that Google normally signs multi-year utility contracts. "Let's say there's a developer who wants to build a wind farm on land nearby. We'd love to buy the power from that wind farm." In order to accomplish this project, Google would need to sign a deal with the developer that required it to purchase the wind power it generates. This could potentially put Google in a position where the company would have to pay for energy before its existing multi-year agreement ends. But if Google Earth is able to buy and sell power, the subsidiary could sign a deal to buy power from the local wind farm. The company could then resell that power on the open market until its current utility deal ends and use the renewable power to operate its own data center.

The claim, one of 4,900 autism cases currently pending in Federal "Vaccine Court," was conceded by US Assistant Attorney General Peter Keisler and other Justice Department officials, on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services, the "defendant" in all Vaccine Court cases.
