Yreka, Siskiyou County -- Some folks around here think the economic sky is falling and state lawmakers in Sacramento and Salem are ignoring their constituents in the hinterlands.

Guess the time is ripe to create a whole new state. That's the thinking up here along the border between California and Oregon, where 12 sparsely populated, thickly forested counties in both states want to break away and generate the 51st star on the nation's flag - the state of Jefferson.

A group of Christian leaders is calling on Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine to rescind a request that state police chaplains offer only "nondenominational" prayers during public events.

Six of the 17 chaplains on the force resigned their posts after the directive was issued. The new policy also drew criticism from lawmakers as being a violation of the First Amendment, an attack on Christianity and a direct prohibition of using the name of Jesus Christ during prayers.

Boeing has fired an employee for speaking to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer after the newspaper published a story in July saying that Boeing couldn't properly protect data in its computer systems.

The fired employee says he was trying to save the company but was treated badly after he raised ethical concerns internally about how the company was conducting security audits of its systems.

Why even try to help parents living in indescribable squalor? Why not just take away the child and be done with it? The answer has nothing to do with the rights of parents and everything to do with the needs of children.

For starters, filthy conditions may tell you that parents are clueless or mentally ill. It does not tell you they are evil or that someone may rape and murder a child. Indeed, all over the country, children have been victims of "fatal neatness" - they die in cases where child protective services was warned, but suspected nothing precisely because the home was spotless.

With an eye on Wall Street's turmoil and the city's fragile economy, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg ordered city agencies to cut spending by about $500 million this year and $1 billion next year.

The cuts are to be made across the board, affecting agencies including the Police Department, which must cut costs by $95 million this year, and the school system, which needs to trim $185 million. Over all, the reductions represent 2.5 percent of the agencies' budgets this year and 5 percent next year.

ABUSED children are routinely returned to the homes where they were assaulted because the NSW Department of Community can no longer find foster carers willing to take them.

"It's a problem of their (DOCS) own making," said one foster mother, who has cared for neglected children, including a blind girl still in her custody, since 1993. "They treat foster parents with complete contempt, and they are leaving in droves."

BROOKSVILLE - Local parents who homeschool their children are in no hurry to send their children back to Hernando County public schools. That much became clear after Thursday's meeting at the school district, hosted by Superintendent Wayne Alexander.

One by one, nearly a dozen of the parents stood behind a podium and told a panel of district experts why they initially pulled their children out of local public schools. According to finance director Deborah Bruggink, each child pulls in approximately $3,998 in state funding. If all homeschooled students enrolled in district schools, that could add as much as $3.34 million to the district's budget.

McDonald's, home of kids' Happy Meals and the Big Mac, has been cited by a boycott campaign for sponsoring conferences at which homosexuals are trained to be activists, according to the American Family Association.

"First, the company paid $20,000 to become a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and to have a seat on the board of directors. Next, McDonald's refused a request to remain neutral in the culture war by choosing to promote the gay agenda. Then McDonald's accused those opposing the gay agenda, including same-sex marriage, of being motivated by hate," the AFA's alert said.

Lobbyists and "special interests" have a pretty bad reputation these days. But not all lobbyists are out to get tax breaks for bigwigs. And some special-interest groups really are special.

That's why I was delighted to learn that the California Youth Connection, an organization that has been banging on doors in Sacramento for 20 years, demanding reform for the foster care system, is receiving a prestigious award today from the James Irvine Foundation. The 2008 Leadership Award recognizes Californians who have successfully tackled some of the state's most critical challenges, from poverty to health care to the environment.
