Using tabs in a user interface can help you better organize content, so it's only natural that WordPress themes that have a lot of options would benefit from tabs on their settings page.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a tabbed settings page, and you'll get to download a WordPress theme that implements the code. To get a quick grasp of the tabs we'll be creating, go to Appearance/Themes in the WordPress admin area. You will find two tabs there: "Manage Themes" and "Install Themes." When you click on one, the content changes and the tab's title is highlighted.

As a Web designer, I often find myself building WordPress-based websites that will ultimately be updated and maintained by clients who have little to no experience working with HTML.

While the TinyMCE rich-text editor is great for giving Web content managers of any skill level the tools they need to easily style and publish their posts to a degree, creating anything beyond a single column of text with a few floated images generally requires at least a basic understanding of HTML. This article shows you an easy-to-implement trick that enables even the least tech-savvy of clients to manage multi-column content layouts within the comfort of the WYSIWIG editor. And for you advanced users, it's still a great way to standardize and streamline your content entry.

Imagine you're playing the latest hash-tag game on Twitter when you see this friendly tweet: "You might want to check your #WP site. It includes two copies of jQuery. Nothing's broken, but loading time will be slower."

WordPress includes these libraries so that plugin and theme authors can avoid this problem by using the wp_register_script and wp_enqueue_script PHP functions to include JavaScript in the HTML. Registering a file alone doesn't do anything to the output of your HTML; it only adds the file to WordPress's list of known scripts. As you'll see in the next section, we register files early on in a theme or plugin where we can keep track of versioning information. To output the file to the HTML, you need to enqueue the file. Once you've done this, WordPress will add the required script tag to the header or footer of the outputted page. More details are provided later in this article.

If you're into WordPress development, you can't ignore hooks for long before you have to delve into them head on.

Modifying WordPress core files is a big no-no, so whenever you want to change existing functionality or create new functionality, you will have to turn to hooks. In this article, I would like to dispel some of the confusion around hooks, because not only are they the way to code in WordPress, but they also teach us a great design pattern for development in general. Explaining this in depth will take a bit of time, but bear with me: by the end, you'll be able to jumble hooks around like a pro.

This tutorial will focus on creating a new overall look for our BuddyPress site and creating a custom home page.

In the last part of this series, I walked you through the BuddyPress theme API and loops. We finished up by creating a child theme that weÕll reuse today in the next part of our series. It was my hope that the framework laid in the last tutorial will make elaborating on our child theme that much easier. This part of the tutorial will focus on creating a new overall look for our BuddyPress site and creating a custom home page. So, letÕs open up our theme folder and get our hands dirty in some code.

In this three part series, we'll explain some core elements of the BuddyPress API and unpack how to create a custom child theme that will survive both BuddyPress and WordPress updates.

With more and more clients looking for social networking, we went over the basics of BuddyPress and the impact that it can bring to your projects. Now, we want to dive into developing child themes that are customized to your needs and that will weather updates to both BuddyPress and WordPress. Recently, I searched in the theme repository for BuddyPress compatible themes and was met with a whopping 19 returned results! Needless to say, this is a market that could use some developing. While there are plugins out there that can make your themes compatible with BuddyPress, I am always a supporter of understanding how to do something yourself and not rely entirely on plugins. Besides this, creating a basic child theme is a straight-forward process, and one worth learning if you plan to develop with BuddyPress.

Today we're going to go over user permissions within the scope of your plugin. Specifically, I'll discuss what you should be using to determine who can see the various admin menus of your plugin.

I stumbled across the complexity of user permissions when working on a multi-site installation of WordPress. We were hosting around 15-20 websites and had approximately 30 plugins installed. Blogs each had users of various levels and responsibilities. My employers would get requests or find plugins with functionality they wanted to offer and it would be up to me to install and configure them. That's when I ran into issues. Often, I found myself modifying plugins to simply accommodate the user roles we were using. The mess was mostly due in part to the different ways WordPress allows you to define who can view and use your plugin.

In this article we will show you how to add additional image sizes in WordPress.

WordPress has a built-in feature Post Thumbnails aka Featured Images. There is also a built-in function add_image_size() which lets you specify image sizes and give you the option to crop. Using these core functions in your theme can essentially eliminate the need of a third party script like TimThumb in most cases.

Many WordPress plugins are inconsistent with the native WordPress user interface in how they implement settings in the administration area for users.

I'm writing this guide to outline a (completely unofficial) set of best practices for implementing settings pages that is consistent and current with the native WordPress administration user interface. I've based these guidelines on my observations and experiences with using plugins in WordPress. They're also totally a work in progress-if you have suggestions, feel free to add them in the comments section.
