Survey shows downturn in child welfare

Finland - Child welfare has taken a downward turn in Finland, according to an international report issued by Save the Children. In the previous review, Finland was placed second in terms of child welfare.

Now the country is in fourteenth place. Topping the league now are Japan and Spain. In the survey, countries were graded into a league table by comparing mortality, under-nourishment and school attendance statistics.

We've been hard at work here at Yoast.com, together with our good friend Arjan Snaterse, to complete the delivery of our next baby: the Local SEO plugin, which is, just like our Video SEO plugin, an extension to the WordPress SEO plugin.

The Local SEO makes creating geo sitemaps and KML files a breeze, while also allowing easy embedding of schema.org annotated info into your pages. Schema.org is tough to implement right. That's why you should have us do it for you, as this plugin takes all the pain away and makes it as easy as embedding a shortcode. In fact, I'll tell you how we learned the hard way. We were ready to start selling this plugin almost a month ago, and then, without any notice, schema.org was updated. It added in another 80+ tags for local business... Sending us back to development.

For all sorts of reasons, some people have a problem with updating WordPress installs properly. I will state now that for both our free and premium plugins we do not support anything but the latest and the prior to last version.

At the time of writing that's WordPress 3.5 and WordPress 3.4. If you're running anything else, we can't help you. But mostly, I want to convince you to upgrade by dispelling all the reasons why you shouldn't or "couldn't" upgrade. The top four reasons we hear...

This morning, an article by Paul Boag was published on Smashing Magazine that got a few SEOs, including myself, all riled up.

As Bill Slawski pointed out in the comments, Paul has written articles on SEO before. Paul, whom I respect tremendously for his web development work, obviously doesn't "get" SEO and has evidently had some bad experiences with the snake oil side of our trade over the years. Luckily he's shown himself to be willing to learn and I hope to be part of that learning experience. But I also wanted to write about this as I think it's important for our industry.

About 2 months ago I released my first premium plugin for WordPress, my Video SEO plugin. A lot of people have asked me about the how and why of the selling and I thought it'd be a good idea to outline that in a post.

Why sell premium WordPress plugins? Of course we got some backlash for making a plugin available to the world and daring to charge for it. Unfortunately there are still people in the WordPress community who think everything should be free. What they don't understand is that not everything can be free.

In helping out people who are using my Video SEO plugin, I'm finding that some sites get "hit" by what I now call the "Not really a video page" effect.

While it's a pretty rare phenomenon I thought it was a good idea to share with the wider community and see what one can do about it. After installing my video SEO plugin there are a few things that can happen, usually after having waited for about a week / two weeks...

On any bigger site, you'll get archive pages of some sort.

Whether they are taxonomy or category archives, like this SEO category, Custom Post Type archives like this one for our WordPress plugin reviews or my speaking engagements, or even date archives: they all share the same common traits. In WordPress an archive will, by default, consist only of a listing of posts. As these pages will get visited by normal people, that means those visitors are "thrown" upon a page that doesn't try to tell them where they are.

In Richmond County, an average of one to three young people age out of foster care each year. Many of them have no adult support system when they leave the homes in which they reside.

Shakena said her and her three siblings were split up, and sent to live in different foster homes for several years. Now she and her 18-year-old sister are living together. Poloche said that many kids miss out on a bonded family experience, and feel that they are ready to get out in the world and start their own lives.

University of St. Thomas freshman Janna Tierney can proudly tout that she successfully self-published her first book, "Kerry, Ireland A.D. 800," before she turned 18.

Two years ago, Tierney, an English major from Humble, began writing the book as a class project. A homeschooled student, Tierney's mother suggested she use a story she wrote in seventh grade as a starting point.
