An Oregon man was told he owes Verizon more than $2 million for a cellphone bill - and the fiasco could cost him his home.

Slusher and his girlfriend bought a pair of phones last November and used the Verizon service for just a month before canceling due to billing issues. "The number of errors and the comedy of which they happened is astounding to me," he said.

After a devastating tsunami left 18,000 people dead in 2011, Japan was about to face a potentially more significant disaster as several reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant started to melt down. More than 300,000 people were evacuated.

Since then, the Japanese government has tried to defend the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), which operated the plant, and offer reassurances that the country's nuclear reactors are secure. A study released Monday in the science journal Philosophical Transactions reaches a different conclusion, however: "The Fukushima accident was preventable, if international best practices and standards had been followed, if there had been international reviews, and had common sense prevailed in the interpretation of preexisting geological and hydrodynamic findings."

Californians may be used to hearing about the threat of potentially deadly earthquakes, but a new study finds that quake-triggered tsunamis pose a greater risk to Southern California than previously thought.

Tsunamis are monster waves that can reach more than 100 feet (30 meters) high. They are often caused by earthquakes; the 2004 Banda Aceh earthquake and tsunami killed about 250,000 people, while the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that struck offshore of Japan killed about 20,000 people and triggered a nuclear disaster.

A Wyoming legislative panel is considering a proposal that would ask the federal government to take the lead on how genetically modified foods are labeled.

The Joint Agriculture, State and Public Lands and Water Resources Interim Committee is scheduled to consider this month a resolution asking Congress to pass legislation creating a national policy for the labeling of the products.

The State of California's Employment Training Panel today approved a contract through its veterans' program for $199,050 to train and place in jobs 75 unemployed veterans.

The program provides veterans with the skills needed to enter the workforce and improves opportunities for advancement in high wage, secure jobs. Since its inception in 2008 as a pilot program, more than 650 veterans have received workforce training through the program.

Scientists in Britain say they have developed a way of genetically modifying and controlling an invasive species of moth that causes serious pest damage to cabbages, kale, canola and other similar crops world-wide.

In what they said could be a pesticide-free and environmentally-friendly way to control insect pests, the scientists, from the Oxford University spin-off company Oxitec, developed diamondback moths with a "self-limiting gene" which dramatically reduced populations in greenhouse trials.
