American taxpayers are paying over $9 billion to subsidize public assistance programs for full-service restaurant workers.

"The lowest wages is the country are actually full-service restaurant occupations, and the difference is with fast food like McDonald's, there's a federal minimum wage of $7.25, but for tipped workers, there's a lower minimum wage for them," Maria Myotte, National Communications Coordinator at ROC, told ATTN:. Since full-service restaurant workers' wages are set to incorporate tips, they make less per hour. But tip amounts are rarely consistent, and generally only bump up wages to regular minimum wage.

Writing on this topic feels like standing before a giant with a thousand voices and opinions. I will be honest and upfront - I won't be able to represent everyone.

In the recent months I have been approached by almost half a dozen parents who are considering homeschooling. My response is "Do it!" Those are the first words that come out. Some ask if my husband and I area worried about their social life. Um, yes we are. Then they try without accusation to look over at our kids and see if they are normal and not hermits.

Employees of a Pico Rivera Walmart who recently learned the store was closing met Thursday with executives to discuss their jobs. A rally has been scheduled to take place in front of the Pico Rivera store on Monday.

A group lined up around 8 a.m. in front of the Double Tree Hotel in Rosemead before they were called in one by one. The store at 8500 Washington Boulevard was closed at 7 p.m. Monday due to chronic plumbing issues, leaving more than 530 employees without jobs.

Twain Harte Community Services District is hoping a municipal well completed last year will soften the blow from looming water restrictions for residents and businesses in the area.

The THCSD Board of Directors has scheduled a public hearing for 9 a.m. April 24 in the district's conference room, at 22933 Twain Harte Drive, to consider implementing mandatory water restrictions on customers for the second consecutive year. District officials say this year's restrictions on THCSD's roughly 1,600 customers are likely not going to be as severe as last summer's 50-percent conservation requirements, largely thanks to the new municipal well that's up and running across from Eproson Park.

If just one in ten Southern Californians were to install a greywater system in their home, the state would conserve as much potable water as it expects to generate through the massive $1 billion desalination plant that is about to come online.

So why aren't more state and local government officials encouraging California homeowners to install residential greywater systems as a key part of reducing urban water usage throughout the state?

"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste," said former White House chief of staff and current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who in 2008 argued that a crisis lets officials "do things that you could not do before."

This bill allows the Department of Fish and Wildlife "to assess civil penalties, including administrative penalties, for obstructing fish passage" and it allows the department to initiate a complaint against property owners for "an unauthorized diversion or use of water that harms fish and wildlife resources," according to the Senate analysis. Republicans, who mostly supported AB 91 despite some grumbling, came out strongly against AB 92 because of this expansion of regulatory power - and because of a provision that creates a new Office of Sustainable Water Solutions. The latter may be a questionable use of tax dollars, but the former has sparked broader concerns.

In the battle against the Common Core, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that the proliferation of these top-down education standards is driving a massive increase in the number of homeschoolers.

Families are realizing that if they want their children to benefit from individualized education, if they want to protect their children from data mining, and if they want to be free of the Common Core's one-size-fits-all approach to education, homeschooling (and certain private schools) is the only way to go.

When you see the number of high ranking military officials who have been fired or just let go it IS SCARY! When I checked out the internet to see how many current Muslims are in the White House it covered 26 pages.

Most people ARE COMPLETELY UNAWARE of what is happening to our country!!! The picture below is of the five first line US nuclear carriers docked together in one place. Just like Battleship Row, Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. These carriers were all pulled out from the MIDDLE EAST and the Afghanistan support role leaving our land forces naked and exposed without the air support needed to carry out their missions!

Half a century ago, she journeyed into the Tanzanian jungle to change how the world saw chimpanzees. Today the world's most famous conservationist is on a mission to save their lives.

Goodall, then 22, saved for two years to pay for her passage to Kenya: waitressing, doing secretarial work, temping at the post office in her hometown, Bournemouth, on England's southern coast, during the holiday rush. She had spent her last few days in London saying goodbyes and picking up a few things for the trip at Peter Jones, the department store in Chelsea. Now all this was for naught, it seemed. The passport must have fallen out of her purse somewhere.

Michigan's teacher of the year railed against standardized testing while emphasizing that teachers should be respected during a speech in front of a crowd of education and business sector officials Tuesday.

Arabo is the 2014-15 Michigan teacher of the year and teaches third grade at Keith Elementary School in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District. During her speech, Arabo gave a list of qualities that employers want from employees, nearly all of which were intrinsic human qualities and not facts that are taught in school. She said the private sector is telling educators that they want well-rounded people, but those in charge of education policy have yet to figure out how to measure those qualities.
