Recently the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced major new regulations on the emissions of methane into the air from oil and gas production.

It calls methane a "potent" pollutant and its new rules would require a 45 percent reduction by 2025 from 2012 levels. Most Americans support these new rules, according to polling from environmental groups. This isn't surprising. Methane sounds like a dirty and dangerous pollutant and even deadly if leaked into water or the air.

The sheriff of Fulton County, New York, Thomas Lorey, made a presentation to some Second Amendment supporters on Friday, January 16.

Lorey's spiel was a call to abide by the Second Amendment of the Constitution by refusing to ask for a permit for the right to own a gun for self-defense. In his speech, Sheriff Lorey directly challenged the powers that be: Don't do it. Let's have everybody's permit expire the same day and [let's see] what they are going to do about it. At least two issues are a stake in this teapot tempest that Lorey hopes to start.

California farmers must restrict their use of a tear gas-like pesticide applied to strawberries and other crops under new rules designed to protect farmworkers and people who live, work and go to school near agricultural fields.

Chloropicrin is "an irritant with characteristics of a tear gas" that was manufactured as a chemical warfare agent during World War I, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Strawberry growers have applied chloropicrin for decades, but its use has increased in recent years as an alternative to methyl bromide, which is being phased out under an international treaty.

Consumer demand for organically produced goods continues to show double-digit growth, providing market incentives for U.S. farmers across a broad range of products. Organic products are now available in nearly 20,000 natural food stores.

USDA does not have official statistics on U.S. organic retail sales, but information is available from industry sources. U.S. sales of organic products were an estimated $28.4 billion in 2012-over 4 percent of total food sales-and will reach an estimated $35 billion in 2014, according to the Nutrition Business Journal.

New research is also showing that the radiation from the Fukushima site is having an adverse effect on wildlife. Timothy Mousseau, professor of biological sciences at the University of South Carolina and researcher for the Chernobyl and Fukushima Research Initiative, presented findings of a study to the International Ornithological Congress in Tokyo last August that suggests radiation contamination around Fukushima Daiichi, even at low levels, is negatively impacting biodiversity and wildlife populations.
