Originally intended to be an "island outside the law" where terrorism suspects could be detained without process and interrogated without restraint, the prison and military commissions at Guantánamo Bay are catastrophic failures.

At home and around the world, Guantánamo has become a symbol of injustice, abuse, and disregard for the rule of law. President Trump has ordered the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba to prepare for "high-level" American prisoners, according to a new Military of Defense report.

I was very excited to see that our local Taco Bell was open inside. Until I ate there. We went inside for the first time in a couple months. A huge hand sanitizer stood near the registers, all the condiment dishes were empty as were the straws and lids...

All the tall tables (where we prefer to sit), had signs on them like the image above and the legs were zip tied together so you couldn't sit down. I was going to sit there anyway because none of the tables were clean. The tables were either occupied (only two) or they were dirty. My husband went to the counter to ask the cashier to clean the tables. She came out to the lobby and cleaned ONE table.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is issuing a guidance document to provide additional temporary flexibility in food labeling requirements to manufacturers and vending machine operators.

First, the FDA is providing flexibility for manufacturers to make minor formulation changes in certain circumstances without making conforming label changes, such as making a change to product ingredients, without updating the ingredient list on the packaged food when such a minor change is made. For purposes of this guidance, minor formulation changes should be consistent with the general factors listed below, as appropriate:

If you care about the working poor, about racial justice, and about climate change, you have to stop eating animals. Is any panic more primitive than the one prompted by the thought of empty grocery store shelves?

Most everyone has been doing more cooking these days, more documenting of the cooking, and more thinking about food in general. The combination of meat shortages and President Trump's decision to order slaughterhouses open despite the protestations of endangered workers has inspired many Americans to consider just how essential meat is.

Record organic sales in the United States totaled nearly $50 billion in 2017 according to the Organic Trade Association. Although organic food still represents only 5.5 percent of food sold, its year-over-year growth has been meteoric.

This has resulted in organic growers and food companies that, although technically adhering to the definition of organic - no chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics or pesticides - are a far cry from the idealism and high standards with which the movement began.

A breakthrough nutritional study conducted at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and published in PLoS ONE has found that just 248mg of magnesium per day leads to an astounding reversal of depression symptoms in study subjects.

"New clinical research results show magnesium is effective at addressing symptoms and is safer and easier on the wallet than prescription therapies," reports Science Daily, echoing the reporting of Natural News from over a decade ago. Today, even mainstream science is now confirming that magnesium is a safe, affordable and effective treatment for depression.

Injecting particles into the atmosphere to cool the planet and counter the warming effects of climate change would do nothing to offset the crop damage from rising global temperatures.

By analyzing the past effects of Earth-cooling volcanic eruptions, and the response of crops to changes in sunlight, the team concluded that any improvements in yield from cooler temperatures would be negated by lower productivity due to reduced sunlight. The findings have important implications for our understanding of solar geoengineering, one proposed method for helping humanity manage the impacts of global warming.

Humans have eaten sourdough since the ancient Egyptians were grinding grains and leavening bread thousands of years ago. But as a child of the '80s, I grew up on processed white bread so soft it practically made chewing unnecessary.

As an adult I've had to part ways with the bread of my childhood. I could no longer digest the commercially processed stuff, but, unfortunately, most of the whole grain loaves I picked up from the bakery weren't any easier on my stomach. Then I found sourdough.

When the Center for Environmental Health released test results showing that Pepsi intentionally covered up the presence of high levels of 4-Mel in its popular soft drinks in 2013, the company denied both the presence of this chemical in its beverages...

And the fact that it was dangerous. 4-Mel, which is short for 4-Methylimidazole, is a compound that is formed in the manufacturing of caramel coloring, and is a known carcinogen. Since then, the drinks maker has fought against complying with California state requirements to place a cancer warning label on the beverages that contain the ingredient, which include not only Pepsi, but also Diet Pepsi and Pepsi One.
