Many U.S. parents are unaware that 8 percent of kids have a food allergy and more than 15 percent of them have an allergic reaction at school, an expert says.

Dr. John "Drew" Bird, a pediatrician at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas who specializes in food allergies, said peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches - along with other lunchbox staples - could turn life-threatening for children with food allergies. Bird, who also is clinical director of the Food Allergy Center at Children's Medical Center Dallas, said in an allergic child just smelling or touching a food can trigger a reaction.

"Organic" is a loaded term. For some, it conjures up idea of lifestyles of the rich and famous, for others, it is a food play.

"Organic" is an adjective used to describe food that has been grown without the use of certain artificial ingredients: things like high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, artificial growth hormones and genetically engineered ingredients. By law, none of these things are allowed in the production of "organic" food. But all of these ingredients are new to our food supply, introduced in the last 30 years, which is why we now call food that doesn't contain them "organic." In Europe and other parts of the world, they take a different approach, simply calling food "food" and labeling the foods that contain the genetically engineered ingredients as "GM food" and simply not using ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, genetically engineered ingredients and artificial growth hormones given that no long-term human health studies have been conducted on what the impact of eating these foods might be on a pregnant mom or a child with allergies.

Organic food is often cited as being better for your health and for the environment. However, many people are put off by organic food's perceived higher price tag.

This month The Soil Association is raising awareness of organic food and wants you to Organic Your September. However, if you think organic food is too costly, switching wholly or partly to organic needn't be as expensive as you probably think.

Did you hear about the 800 esteemed scientists who came together and demanded the production of genetically modified crops and products be stopped?

Scientists who called on world powers to re-evaluate the future of agriculture and seek sustainability rather than corporate profits? Don't be surprised if you haven't, as the mainstream media won't touch this one. Eight-hundred scientists did make such a demand. They made it first over a decade ago and they have updated it over the years, adding signatures and release dates. Still global powers have all but ignored their calls. The Institute of Science in Society is a non-profit group of scientists from around the world, dedicated to bringing an end to what they refer to as the "dangerous GMO "experiment. In their open letter to the world, they have highlighted why governments need to stop genetically modified crops now - before there are irreversible effects on the health of the people and the health of the earth at large.

Facebook's share price has fallen below $20 for the first time, as it was revealed around 8 percent of its accounts could be sketchy.

The social-networking website is now worth almost half what it was when it floated on the Nasdaq in May. It has lost nearly $50 billion in value -- more than the total valuation of Hewlett Packard or coffee company Starbucks. The stock debuted at $38 and since then has headed south, hit by increased doubts about its high valuation, growth prospects, and worries over its ability to make money from its growing mobile audience

Declassified documents prove them.

We all know the conspiracy theories - the government's plan for 9/11, the second gunman who shot JFK, the evolution of the elite from a race of blood-drinking, shape-shifting lizards. But the people who spread these ideas usually can't prove them. As the years pass, however, secrets surface. Government documents become declassified. We now have evidence of certain elaborate government schemes right here in the U.S. of A.

In April 2014, at the age of 22, I was diagnosed with a severe tree nut allergy. Yes -- adult onset food allergies. It started with just tree nuts, and I only reacted if I actually ate one.

I'm a self-sustaining woman; I live on my own, I am in graduate school, I work full time, and I have a man-child (my boyfriend). My world was pretty much turned upside down by these food allergies, and aside from the insurmountable learning curve I have had, and continue to endure, everyday life still proves to be a challenge in ways that most people without food allergies don't even think about. So, the next time you encounter a person with food allergies, I hope you remember some of these points -- even just one would be helpful to know.

I love cheese, and I've yet to really meet a person who doesn't. But finding high quality GMO free cheeses is getting harder.

You probably already know about how most dairy cows in the United States are fed GMO feed, but is there another GMO derived ingredient that could be contaminating even the grass-fed farm cheeses? The answer is sadly YES.
