The case of an 8-year-old Cleveland Heights boy taken from his family because he weighs more than 200 pounds has renewed a debate on whether parents should lose custody if a child is severely obese.

The boy was removed from his family and was placed in foster care in October after county case workers said his mother wasn't doing enough to control his weight. The boy, at his weight, is considered at risk for developing such diseases as diabetes and high blood pressure. Government growth charts say most boys his age weigh about 60 pounds. Roughly 2 million U.S. children are extremely obese - weighing significantly more than what's considered healthy.

The global farmland area certified organic has expanded more than threefold to 37 million hectares since 1999, according to new research conducted by the Worldwatch Institute.

The Institute argues that organic farming has the potential to contribute to sustainable food security by improving nutrition intake and sustaining rural livelihoods, while reducing vulnerability to climate change and enhancing biodiversity. "Organic farming is now established in international standards, and 84 countries had implemented organic regulations by 2010," wrote Catherine Ward and Laura Reynolds, Worldwatch researchers and lead authors of the report. The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements defines organic agriculture has a production system that relies on ecological processes rather than the use of synthetic inputs (e.g. chemical fertilizers and pesticides). While organic farming has been practiced throughout most of human history, its modern roots lie in the middle of the last century.

As Agenda 21 creeps closer to everyday life, the state of Utah has proposed the registration of 10,000 gardens.

Disguising the registration as a "contest" will easily get unsuspecting enthusiasts to provide personal information about themselves and their food sustainability that would not generally be available. This should raise red flags in every Americans mind. Your privacy is of the utmost importance and you should never voluntarily give it away.

A lot of people today, horrified by how animals are treated in factory farms and feedlots, and wanting to lower their ecological footprint, are looking for healthier alternatives.

As a result, there is a decided trend toward pasture-raised animals. One former vegetarian, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Mark Morford, says he now eats meat, but only "grassfed and organic and sustainable as possible, reverentially and deeply gratefully, and in small amounts." Sales of grassfed and organic beef are rising rapidly. Ten years ago, there were only about 50 grassfed cattle operations left in the U.S. Now there are thousands.

In a packed courtroom, 52-year-old Ernie Tertelgte told the judge "I am a living man protected by natural law and I have the right to forage for food when I am hungry... You are trying to create a fictitious, fraudulent action."

Charged with fishing without a license and resisting the arrest for fishing without a license, Mr. Tertegte says he's being wrongly prosecuted for trying to feed himself.

Wednesday, June 29, 2011, as I sat under the gazebo watching my son practice his routine on the trampoline, a young buck, probably not more than a year old, came wandering down the driveway nibbling at the tall grass as he came closer.

Yesterday, the graceful buck was struck broadside by a passing motorist on the road, fracturing his left front shoulder and rear leg. My son and I were out for a walk, when he noticed the deer down a steep incline, on the side of the mountain overlooking our house. It was obvious his leg and shoulder were broken, he was bleeding from his mouth and in undeniable distress. Shawn described him as though he were a trout flopping around the boat, gasping for air.

Back in 2006 we were warned of impending disaster due to the Avian Bird Flu virus that supposedly had the ability to mutate and cause such widespread disease and death, that a national pandemic was declared by President Bush.

This resulted in Congress passing legislation granting pharmaceutical companies immunity from any legal damages that would result in their rushing a vaccine to market in order to combat this "terrible" bird flu virus. The theory at the time was that outbreaks in Asia would come to America through migratory wild birds. Well, as it turned out, it never happened. That flu season was no worse than other flu seasons, and the wild birds carrying this virus, that we were told could wipe out humanity, never showed up. One of the other things that was discussed during this time, and which as actually proposed in the UK, was to eliminate outdoor poultry flocks...
