Signs point to an exodus in Georgia's rural Vidalia onion country now that the state has passed a get-tough law on illegal immigrants.

It could affect the state's Vidalia onion crop, which needs intense labor for planting and harvesting. The vegetables can be bruised or damaged by machines. Farmworker Alfredo Perez says he arrived illegally from Mexico three years ago. He travels between Florida, Michigan and Georgia working on farms. He says he'll think twice about coming back to Georgia because of the new law.

Most of us are genuinely trying to do our best to be healthy -- we buy organic food, try to drink filtered water and include more fruits and vegetables with every meal. But what about the packaging surrounding our food?

Chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates and PCV (polyvinyl chloride) have all been found in plastic food packaging, the linings of soda cans and canned food. These chemicals, often referred to as endocrine disruptors, do much more than simply help to protect and contain our food. They can mimic our natural hormones, turning on or off the body's native hormone signals to block natural responses or trigger excessive action.

Watermelons have been bursting by the score in eastern China after farmers gave them overdoses of growth chemicals during wet weather, creating fields of "land mines" instead of the bounty of fruit they wanted.

About 20 farmers around Danyang city in Jiangsu province were affected, losing up to 115 acres (45 hectares) of melon, China Central Television said in an investigative report. Prices over the past year prompted many farmers to jump into the watermelon market.

The study provides undeniable proof that Monsanto's GMO Crops carry serious risks to health, and also that Monsanto has known about it all along and hidden the information.

The data from three animal feeding studies conducted by or for Monsanto were reanalyzed by an independent French scientist. The results are shocking, both for the clear indication of harm done by Monsanto's corn and for the obvious hiding of that information.

A $2 million project being unveiled Wednesday in the lunchroom of a Texas elementary school will use high-tech cameras to photograph what foods children pile onto their trays - and later capture what they don't finish eating.

Digital imaging analysis of the snapshots will then calculate how many calories each student scarfed down. Local health officials said the program, funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, is the first of its kind in a U.S. school, and will be so precise that the technology can identify a half-eaten pear left on a lunch tray.

Three independent studies found that children whose mothers are exposed to common agricultural pesticides are more likely to experience a range of deleterious effects in their cognitive development, including lower IQ, as well as impaired reasoning and me

Organic agriculture prohibits the use of these pesticides, and all other toxic and persistent chemicals. "Less pesticide exposure during the maternal life stage means less risks to your babies for a variety of diseases that will only manifest years later. Since women eat more during their pregnancy, one significant way to reduce their pesticide exposure is to eat organic foods," said Dr. Chensheng (Alex) Lu of the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.

When it comes to following a green diet, there are several different aspects to consider. There's your own health (and pocketbook), the ecological impact of growing and transporting food, and the waste generated from packaging.

Officially, the USDA organic label means foods are produced without antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, irradiation or bioengineering. "Eating organic foods reduce your exposure to chemicals, many which have been linked to everything from headaches, autoimmune diseases and cancer," explains Betty Keller, M.D.
