Edible News

After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

If you aren't aware of the danger genentically modified corn and soy products present to your families diet, continue reading. Find out the latest news and commentary on GMO food sources, eating and buying organic foods, nutritional news, food related health issues and much more.

Olive oil comes from olives. Sesame seed oil comes from sesame seeds. But what is a canola? Canola is actually a made-up word for a genetically modified product.

Canola stands for "Canadian oil low acid." It's (sadly) a Canadian invention and subsidized by the government. The subsidies make it very cheap to use, so almost all processed or packaged foods contain canola oil. Be sure to read the ingredients. Here's why you should:

I am endlessly amazed at how backwards we humans get things in our lives. Just let me give you two very basic examples, one of which is a crime against humanity.

I keep reading in the New York Times that Mayor Bloomberg, a billionaire health nut, is on a campaign against having too much salt in foods in New York City restaurants. His belief is that New Yorkers and visitors shorten their life spans by eating too much salt and therefore raising their blood pressure in a dangerous way. If he took control over the salt content in New York restaurants, he could save a few dozen lives per year, he believes. But, wait a moment. I also read in the New York Times that New York City is one of the abortion capitals of the nation, with a much higher rate of abortion than most other parts of the nation. And Mayor Bloomberg is a great fan of "...a woman's right to choose..." to abort her baby.

Nonetheless, the loss of bees through colony collapse disorder has serious consequences for plants, wildlife and -- yes -- human survival.

That old urban legend about Einstein and the bees has won fresh buzz, with Britain's Daily Telegraph currently repeating it like fact. As we discussed back in 2007, there's a lot of reason to be concerned about declining bees, but not because of something falsely attributed to Einstein.

The rise of Monsanto and the price of the privatization of the world's crop supply.

Popular Science just published a profile on agribusiness giant Monsanto, looking at the nitty gritty of how the company develops and produces its genetically modified seeds. Monsanto obviously has reasons to avoid the press; continued bans on its products by European countries and news of the company's lawsuits against thousands of small farmers and antitrust problems with the government have certainly not endeared it to the public.

Reason TV gives a report on the problems plaguing California's Central Valley, once a breadbasket to the world, and now a government-created basket case of dust, unemployment, poverty, and now starvation.

The short documentary focuses on two federal policies that heavily impact the farming region, the first water policy and environmentalism, and the second immigration. Without doubt, immigration policy impacts farming areas like the Central Valley (as well as the Midwestern plains), but the problems in the Central Valley now have nothing to do with federal enforcement of immigration law. The enforcement of the law has been spotty at best during the last three administrations. Nor has Congress done much about it; building a fence on the California border shifted the crossings to Arizona, which has had to deal with the traffic and its attendant issues.

Find out how the U.S. government subsidizes the commercial dairy industry and how this affects the supply of raw milk.

You're likely familiar with the "Got Milk" advertising campaign that encourages you to drink more milk for its array of health benefits. Perhaps you also saw the ads a few years back stating that eating more dairy could help you lose weight. Both of these marketing campaigns were created by a nonprofit corporation called Dairy Management -- an organization that not only employs 162 highly skilled product developers and marketers but also is largely funded by the U.S. government. As the New York Times reported, Dairy Management's $140-million annual budget comes in large part from a government-mandated fee on the dairy industry along with several million a year from the Agriculture Department.

Doesn't it seem like almost everything is becoming a crime in America now?  Americans are being arrested and charged with crimes for doing things like leaving dog poop on the ground, opening up Christmas presents early, not recycling properly, far

But is it healthy for our society for the police to be involved in such silly things? Every single day the United States inches closer to becoming a totalitarian society. While there are some that would welcome this shift, the truth is that throughout history the societies that have experienced the greatest economic prosperity have all had at least a certain level of freedom. Business thrives when people feel free to live and work. When a government tightens the grip too much many people just start shutting down.

The laboratory tests, conducted by the Environmental Working Group of Washington, D.C., found the highest levels in the drinking water of Norman, Okla.; Honolulu; and Riverside, Calif. Bend, the only Oregon city sampled.

State, federal and local drinking water officials say they'll review the findings, one of the broadest surveys for hexavalent chromium ever conducted. Hexavalent chromium is the toxic form of chromium, which can enter water through erosion from natural deposits or from industrial discharges from the manufacture of stainless steel, metal plating, wood products or textiles. The point sources in the study were not identified.

BOSTON -- Organic food is increasingly more popular. But dietitians say shoppers have to be educated about the products because some of them are high in fat and calories, or not really natural at all.

"You need to read the label and have some idea of what your calorie boundaries are," said registered dietician Jen Reid. "Otherwise you are going to wind up with a very high calorie food despite the fact that it's organic or natural," she said.

In Western Australia organic farmer Stephen Marsh has had his organic accreditation suspended after independent testing showed his oats and cereal crops had been contaminated by genetically modified (GM) seeds.

The Liberal Party Barnett Government allowed Genetically Modified (GM) canola crops to be grown commercially early this year, despite warnings that contamination of organically grown crops was a palpable risk. The National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA) is conducting an official investigation.
