We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

This World Food Day, on Friday, all roads lead to the magnificent Nakuru County in Kenya's rift valley region; where a demonstration and a public debate have been organised to challenge the push for the introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms.

The Kenya Biodiversity Coalition (KBioC) together with Greenpeace Africa, Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN) and the Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE) are joining the rest of the world to celebrate and address critical issues and concerns around the Right to food. Through the demonstration, the organisations aim to call on the Government of Kenya (GOK) not to lift the ban on GMOs.

"What's on your fork?" the Oct. 11 Daily News asked in a story. That's what I'd like to know. But Monsanto and other GMO-producing corporations want to keep it a secret from us.

According to every poll, the vast majority of Americans want genetically-modified food labeled as such. Over 60 countries, including all of Europe and China and Japan either require labeling of GMO food or have simply banned it outright. Russia has outlawed GMO seed and food, seeking to preserve the healthfulness of its food and the integrity of its soil (GMO seed requires massive applications of pesticide which is conveniently manufactured by the same GMO companies).

We start this morning with another pumpkin story. This one is sad. A farmer in Markham is devastated after his pumpkins were stolen from his farm. No reports from police on a sudden surge in jack-o-lanterns in the area.

GMOs aren't the only issue Wall is concerned about in this election. As the Western Producer reports, he also warned Tuesday against an NDP win in the federal election, pointing to the party's opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership. Fast food giant McDonald's says it plans to use sustainable beef by 2016 - with the expectation that at least part of it will be sourced from Canadian producers.

No, we're not kidding. Help us stop this unwarranted attack. Action Alert!

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, a division of the US Treasury Department, recently sent letters to several producers of kombucha, warning them that since their beverages supposedly exceeded the allowable alcohol limit, they must be labeled as alcoholic beverages and be subject to alcohol regulation or face hefty fines and legal action.

The Aliso Viejo girl is severely allergic to 65 percent of all foods, including nuts, fish, dairy, gluten, legumes and some fruits. She is also allergic to pollen, dust, latex, penicillin, pesticides and genetically modified food.

Although Aeverie has never eaten a nut and has only been affected by airborne allergens or by touch, she has had some close calls. When she walked by a bakery a month ago, the airborne allergens triggered a seizure. And when she was just 6 months old, she ended up on a ventilator in the hospital for two weeks after receiving a kiss from her cousin, who had eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Legislation blocking states and municipalities from requiring genetically modified food be labeled as such is languishing in the U.S. Senate. The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, H.R. 1599, passed the House by a vote of 275-150 on July 23.

"We're going to have a biotech hearing right off the bat," Roberts said Thursday. "We don't call it GMO, we call it biotech for a purpose. We are trying to prove to the American people that their food is safe and we have everybody from the FDA to the USDA to EPA testifying." Opponents of genetically modified food, such as organic farmers, argue its health effects have not been properly studied and that most Americans are in favor of GMO labeling. They refer to Pompeo's bill as the Denying Americans the Right to Know Act, or DARK Act.

Last year, we brought you the news of Burger King's limited edition Japan-only black hamburger. The unusual appearance of the so-called "Kuro Burgers" is due to their bamboo-coal-infused buns, squid-inked cheese, and pepper-encrusted meat patties.

A black hamburger. Why not? McDonald's has its green "Shamrock Shake" every year for St. Patrick's Day, why shouldn't diehard goths be able to wolf down a seasonal "Kuro Burger" before they go trick or treating or to a Bauhaus reunion concert?

Thanks to a little-known congressional bill, it may soon be impossible to tell whether your Fourth of July burger is all-American Angus or beef imported from the Amazon, according to a Facebook meme.

Under the country-of-origin labeling law, or COOL, supermarkets have to tell consumers where their meat, fish, and nuts are produced with varying degrees of specificity (i.e. "Born in Canada, Slaughtered in the U.S.", "Farm-Raised in Vietnam", or simply a laundry list of all the countries the product has passed through). COOL passed in 2002 but wasn't fully implemented until March 2009.

The House voted to remove country-of-origin labels on beef, pork and chicken sold in the U.S., hoping to prevent a protracted battle over the labels with Canada and Mexico.

Thanks to a little-known congressional bill, it may soon be impossible to tell whether your Fourth of July burger is all-American Angus or beef imported from the Amazon, according to a Facebook meme. "The House of Representatives just voted 300-131 to remove 'country-of-origin labeling' on chicken, pork, and beef sold in the United States," the meme says. "Sorry but you don't deserve to know where your meat is coming from." Buy Local!

In yet another case of labeling tricks and deception where store bought food is concerned, cheese produced in the United States and labeled as "raw" at the healthfood store and specialty shops is anything but.

Organic Valley, the corporate behemoth that has gone to the Dark Side where raw, fresh, organic, health giving grassfed milk is concerned is not surprisingly the worst offender of this loophole in the USDA regulations.
