Edible News

After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

Check out the video link and you'll see an entire museum of Big Macs and hamburgers spanning the years -- none of which have decomposed.

The truth is many processed foods don't decompose and won't be eaten by molds, insects or even rodents. Try leaving a tub of margarine outside in your yard and see if anything bothers to eat it. You'll find that the margarine stays seems immortal, too!

Despite there being not even a single report of illness, there have been numerous instances over the past four years where licensed raw milk dairies in New York and Pennsylvania have had their sales suspended due to positive tests for Listeria monocytogen

The farmers typically lost a week to two weeks in sales plus the price of any milk the farms received back after issuing a recall due to the discovery of L-mono in a milk sample. Some farmers were also fined for adulteration because the raw milk was deemed to contain a "harmful substance which may render the milk injurious to health."

You can be savvy with Whole Foods grocery shopping if you know the tricks of the trade. People are loving organic food, especially with documentaries such as Food Inc. shedding light on unhealthy farming practices.

But going organic can be more expensive, so I turned to Ashley Hawkins, spokesperson of the supermarket chain, for some tips on how to save. Most stores or metro areas have their own Twitter and Facebook pages, and they definitely list deals and specials there.

When John Mackey dropped out of his second university, his aspirations to open a natural foods supermarket looked shaky. He had no money, no business training, and no degree.

He hoped to open a vegetarian store in the carnivorous state of Texas. His mother thought he was wasting a good mind to become a grocer. Mackey and Lawson opened Safer Way in 1978, knowing full well that health food was a gamble. When the couple used their apartment to store food, they were thrown out and forced to move into the second floor of Safer Way, where they showered with a hose.

APHIS announced it intended to issue permits to sugar beet seed producers authorizing seedling production under strict permit conditions that would not allow flowering.

APHIS issued four "non-flowering" permits with appropriate environmental and permitting documentation. The move didn't sit well with environmental groups opposing biotech crops. An environmental coalition filed a lawsuit on Sept. 9 challenging the issuance of permits to sugar beet seed producers.

No good deed goes unpunished. McDonald's takes a lot of heat for the nutritive value of its menu, but the company did try to find ways to improve the health of its staff by offering them a low-cost health insurance plan.

McDonald's Corp. has warned federal regulators that it could drop its health insurance plan for nearly 30,000 hourly restaurant workers unless regulators waive a new requirement of the U.S. health overhaul.

Aussie mums are undertaking DIY labelling of contaminated baby food this morning, after tests showed one of Australia's leading infant formulas contains a number of unlabelled genetically modified products.

Activists in Sydney and Melbourne have taken food safety into their own hands and labelled the baby formula, S-26 Soy, clearly tagging it as genetically modified and giving parents the right to choose. At 9am this morning, mothers entered a major Woolworth's outlet in Sydney and Coles' Fitzroy store in Melbourne to stage a sit in. They are demanding that supermarkets remove the products from the shelves until proper testing and labelling has been undertaken.

ARTIFICIAL food colourings linked to hyperactive behaviour in young people need to be phased out in Australia, as they have been in Britain, according to a growing chorus of nutritionists and child welfare groups.

Grocery chain Aldi and at least three large food brands have already chosen to remove such colourings from products available on Australian supermarket shelves. But the government agency Food Standards Australia New Zealand says there is not enough evidence to ban the colourings.

The nationwide recall of Similac baby formula has sent parents into a scramble as they try to make sure their children haven't consumed any of the tainted product.

Abbott Laboratories Inc., a Chicago-area company, announced Wednesday it was recalling about 5 million units of its popular powdered baby formula after beetles and larvae were found in the product at a plant in Michigan. Since news of the recall broke, Abbott has been so inundated with inquiries that people have said it is difficult to get through to the company.

Earlier this month, the FDA released a preliminary report that the salmon "is as safe as food from conventional Atlantic salmon" and unlikely to harm the environment.

In a step that may move genetically engineered meat and fish closer to the American dinner table, an FDA advisory committee is due to vote on preliminary findings that a modified salmon is as safe as an ordinary salmon. Such votes are not binding on the FDA but usually have strong influence.
