Genetically modified sugar beets make up 95 percent of the crop in the U.S.

A federal judge says sugar beet farmers can't plant genetically engineered varieties next year, and those farmers, who produce half of America's sugar, now are in a bind. Many of them say they cannot go back to the way they used to work because they don't own those tools anymore and there aren't enough conventional seeds to go around. The genetically engineered sugar beets, called "Roundup Ready" beets, can survive doses of the herbicide Roundup.

You'd have to be living under a rock not to notice that adrenal problems are at epidemic proportions in our modern culture.

The fact that a Starbucks or some other coffee shop is on practically every corner and that the average American now consumes a whopping 180 lbs per year of refined sugars is surely evidence enough. By the way, the 180 lbs of sugar per year figure is a shocking 27% increase just since 2003 when sugar consumption was 142 lbs per person per year! Caffeine and sugar consumed in excess amounts will sucker punch your adrenal glands faster than just about anything else, no doubt about it.

Olives are one of the oldest foods known to man and their one of the tastiest as well. Their rich history surrounds California's roots and goes back to biblical days. However, these delicious fruits have to be cured prior to eating.

If you have ever tasted an olive right off the tree you know the intense bitter flavors will coat your palate for hours.  For many families around the globe curing olives at home as a family is still a time honored tradition (often a multigenerational annual event), but it's not something that gets shared with mainstream America all that often. On September 18th, 2010, Chaffin Family Orchards will be hosting an Olive Curing Demonstration.

Technically, any lemonade stand -- even one on your front lawn -- must be licensed under state law, said Eric Pippert, the food-borne illness prevention program manager for the state's public health division.

Franklin is organizing a "Lemonade Revolt" for Last Thursday in August. He's calling on anarchists, neighbors and others to come early for the event and grab space for lemonade stands on Alberta between Northeast 25th and Northeast 26th.

Many of the freedoms we enjoy here in the U.S. are quickly eroding as the nation transforms from the land of the free into the land of the enslaved, but what I'm about to share with you takes the assault on our freedoms to a whole new level.

You may not be aware of this, but many Western states, including Utah, Washington and Colorado, have long outlawed individuals from collecting rainwater on their own properties because, according to officials, that rain belongs to someone else. As bizarre as it sounds, laws restricting property owners from "diverting" water that falls on their own homes and land have been on the books for quite some time in many Western states. Only recently, as droughts and renewed interest in water conservation methods have become more common, have individuals and business owners started butting heads with law enforcement over the practice of collecting rainwater for personal use.

A new study has suggested that cell phone radiation may be contributing to declines in bee populations in some areas of the world.

Bee populations dropped 17 percent in the UK last year, according to the British Bee Association, and nearly 30 percent in the United States says the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Parasitic mites called varroa, agricultural pesticides and the effects of climate change have all been implicated in what has been dubbed "colony collapse disorder" (CCD). But researchers in India believe cell phones could also be to blame for some of the losse

Nebraska-based Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) had employees of a Chinese state agency inspect the state controlled-farms.

Organic food from China, including frozen vegetables, edemame soybeans, ginger, and tea, have found their way into supermarkets including Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.  The packages often sport the "U.S.D.A. Organic" seal, but concern and even outrage over Chinese goods in recent years-from tainted pet food to lead paint-has prompted more retailers, including Whole Foods, to reduce the number of organic products coming from China.

Restaurant owner Ian Brandt likes to push Utah's culinary boundaries. Ten years ago, he and his wife, Kelsey, opened Sage's Cafe, which served cutting-edge vegetarian cuisine at a time when Utah was still mostly a meat-and-potatoes kind of town.

In 2007, the young couple followed that initial success with Utah's first all-vegan restaurant, Vertical Diner. Brandt has done it again with the opening of Cali's Natural Foods, 389 W. 1700 South, Salt Lake City. At the warehouse-style market, more than 95 percent of the offerings are organic, many come from local and regional sources.
