"No evidence organic foods benefit health: study." That's the headline of a story that Reuters published on Monday. Really?!

If true, this would've been news to me, so I checked it out. Sure enough, they elaborate in the first sentence that "there is currently no strong evidence that organics bring nutrition-related health benefits, a new research review finds." I couldn't believe what I was reading until I got to the end and figured it out: the study ignored all the health benefits of avoiding synthetic chemicals.

Recently a study published in the journal Pediatrics found a possible correlation between pesticides and ADHD.

Out of the 1,139 children in the study (ADHD and non-ADHD), 94 percent were found to have some levels of organophosphate (pesticide) compound in their urine.

Researchers tracked the pesticides' breakdown products in kids' urine and found those with high levels were almost twice as likely to develop ADHD as those with undetectable levels.

The findings are based on data from the general U.S. population, meaning that exposure to the pesticides could be harmful even at levels commonly found in children's environment. Organophosphates were originally developed for chemical warfare, and they are known to be toxic to the nervous system.

Federal health authorities say 12 of those sickened were hospitalized and three reported life-threatening symptoms. The CDC says it is looking at 10 other cases probably linked to the outbreak.

PepsiCo is a member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership a coalition of corporations and environmental groups. USCAP's mission is to "quickly enact strong national legislation to require significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions."

The House of Representatives has obliged in the form of the Waxman-Markey bill. According to the Heritage Foundation, this bill would destroy over 1.1 million jobs, hike electricity rates 90 percent, and reduce the U.S. gross domestic product by nearly $10 trillion over the next 25 years.

Diving into the "paper or plastic" war, the California Supreme Court will decide whether it's legal for a community near Los Angeles to outlaw the use of plastic bags at checkout counters.

When Manhattan Beach banned the bags in July 2008, the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition was quick to mobilize. Somewhere along the line, public opinion landed on the side of paper bags, which are easier to recycle than their plastic counterparts. But a 2007 investigation by the Washington Post revealed that paper is just as harmful - and sometimes more so - than plastic for the environment.
